When looking for a hotel in Limenes, you can first compare the area’s coastal features with your travel plans. The small beach of Psili Ammos lies beside the small harbor in the main settlement of Kaloí Liménes. Together with Karavovrysi and Makria Ammos, these three beaches form a group with a total length of two kilometers. There is also the Bay of Stena and the opportunity to kayak on the sea. These provide concrete points of reference when choosing where to stay: the harbor, the features of individual beaches, access to Stena, or an activity on the water. If you are looking for suitable hotels, these interests can help you decide which aspect of Limenes matters most to you.

Beaches by the Harbor and in the Bay

Psili Ammos is right next to the small harbor and is considered suitable for children. The three beaches of Karavovrysi, Psili Ammos, and Makria Ammos are two kilometers long in total; this length applies to the group as a whole. Makria Ammos is the largest beach in Kaloí Liménes and has fine pebbles and deep water. This gives you different features to consider when choosing where to stay: Psili Ammos combines its harbor location with its general suitability for children, while Makria Ammos is characterized by its size, shore composition, and water depth. You can therefore take into account both the beach group as a whole and the distinctive features of an individual beach.

Beach Names and Historical Connections

The names of Makria Ammos also refer to the area’s history. The beach is known by the names Armirikia, Dentra, and Sissamolakkos; these names are connected with sesame cultivation there during the Venetian occupation. At this same beach, coastal features and a historical connection come together. A tradition also links the landing of the Apostle Paul on his journey to Rome with one of the beaches of Kaloí Liménes. The beach in question is not named. The story therefore refers to a beach in the area and cannot be reliably attributed to any of the three names.

Getting There and Activities by the Sea

Stena lies beside Kaloí Liménes in an enclosed, secluded bay. To visit, leave your vehicle in Kaloí Liménes and then walk about 400 meters along an unpaved road to the beach. The distance is approximate; check local conditions before setting out. Unlike Psili Ammos by the harbor, the final stretch on foot described for Stena is also a specific point to consider when planning your visit.

An asphalt road leads from Pómpia via Pigaidákia to Kaloí Liménes. For your journey, you can distinguish this access road from the onward route to the beach: the asphalt road leads into the settlement, while after parking, the way to Stena beach continues on foot along an unpaved road. Kaloí Liménes, a harbor in the south of the Heraklion regional unit, is also a place where you can kayak on the sea. Alongside the beaches’ features, an activity on the water is another distinct option.
