Stilida offers several distinct points of interest to consider when planning your trip: its hillside setting on Mount Othrys, the central square opposite the harbor, a beach walk, and historical traces. The natural bay of the Malian Gulf is about half a kilometer from Stilida. The beach is a place for a stroll, while the square is a place to relax.

Location and routes

The town is built amphitheatrically on the slopes of Mount Othrys. This hillside setting is part of the town’s character, while the natural bay offers a distinct geographical point of interest. In Stilida itself, you can take a stroll along the beach. In the wider travel area, Mount Othrys is known for its many hiking trails. The beach walk and the hiking trails have different geographical focuses: the walk is in Stilida, while the trails are on the mountain in the wider travel area. This can help with planning if you want to distinguish between an activity in town and a hiking theme in the broader travel area.

Harbor square and park

At Stilida’s central square, opposite the harbor, cafés, ouzeries, and small tavernas offer visitors a place to relax. The park “Πάρκο του Λαού” is used for recreation and sports activities. The two places have different focuses: the square centers on relaxing and its eateries, while the park is for recreation and sports. For your trip planning, this is a distinct point of interest alongside the beach and hiking trails: it is about different ways to spend your free time within Stilida.

Phalara and historical traces

Parts of the fortifications have survived at the site of Phalara in Stilida. They are located near “Αγία Αικατερίνη” to the west and “Καλόγερος” to the east of the town. Underwater work at the harbor completely destroyed the eastern fortification in the previous century. At “Νησάκι,” the ruins of the wall’s foundations are still visible today. Thus, surviving parts of the fortifications and the visible ruins of a destroyed section are among the town’s historical points of interest.

Within the boundaries of present-day Stilida, fragmentary settlement remains from ancient Phalara and tombs dating from the Late Classical, Hellenistic, and Roman periods have been investigated. A late Roman building complex with bathing facilities dating from the 2nd–4th/5th century was also investigated on Kostorizou Street. The types of finds and their dates can be considered separately: the settlement remains and tombs point to ancient Phalara, while the building complex is late Roman. The tombs date from the Late Classical period through the Hellenistic and into the Roman period; the building complex, dated to the late Roman period, provides another chronological reference point. This lets you organize the historical topics by both type and period. The fortifications add another aspect of the town’s history.
