Ypati brings together evidence from different periods and hiking trails leading to clearly named destinations. Churches, castle ruins, an observatory, and trails to the small church of Arsali or Kremastos Waterfall offer different starting points for planning a trip. You can weigh whether you are most interested in architectural history, a visit that needs to be arranged in advance, or the landscape around the town.

Churches and traces of earlier times

Hagia Sophia was built on the site of an older church, which probably dates from the early Christian period. Architectural elements from the early Christian, Byzantine, and post-Byzantine periods have been incorporated into its façades. Remains of a 5th-century baptistery were also found on the south side. The probable dating of the earlier church remains a supposition; the different architectural elements point to further layers of history.

The Church of Saint Nicholas also offers archaeological evidence of the site's earlier use. A section of the mosaic floor in the courtyard and reused sculptural elements in the church point to an early Christian basilica dating from the 4th to 6th centuries. Together with the architectural elements of Hagia Sophia, these provide different traces of early Christian architecture in Ypati.

The town's history also includes fortifications: Ypati was first fortified in the Hellenistic period. Remains of these fortifications have been found at several locations around the castle and the present-day settlement. Several remains of the Byzantine castle have also survived, including the ruins of a round tower. The traces of fortifications and the surviving castle ruins are two distinct aspects of the town's history.

The “Κακογιάννειο” Αστεροσχολείο Υπάτης operates an observatory run by Σ.Ε.Α.Φ. Guided tours outside school hours are held in cooperation with the Municipality of Lamia. If you are planning a tour, you can contact the staff of Σ.Ε.Α.Φ. in advance to arrange the details of your visit.

Trails and destinations around Ypati

An unusual ascent route leads from Ypati to the small church of Arsali. Its name is “Χωριό Υπάτη - Εκκλησάκι Αρσαλή”. The “Γύρος της Υπάτης” is also designated as a circular route. The routes differ in their layout: one focuses on an ascent to a named destination, while the other is a circular trail. Check current trail conditions before setting out on a hike.

Another hike descends from Ypati through a phrygana ecosystem with ασφάκες and λαδανιές to the Xirias. The trail then follows the stream to the 45-meter-high Kremastos Waterfall. The route thus connects a described vegetation area, the stream, and the waterfall as a nearby destination. Unlike the ascent route to the small church, this hike is defined by its course alongside water and through the landscape.

An annual event is also associated with the trails around Ypati: the Oiti Mountain Marathon takes place on these trails. If the marathon is important to your travel plans, check the latest event details and dates.

Thermal park in nearby Loutra Ypatis

In nearby Loutra Ypatis, there is a park of about 90 stremma with pine trees, intended for recreation. It has thermal springs, modern hydrotherapy facilities, and an outdoor thermal-water pool. Facilities and their availability may change, so check which services are currently available before visiting. Descriptions from the mid-20th century indicate that the thermal spring was already in use in antiquity. This historical account concerns the use of the spring and says nothing about present-day bathing opportunities.

The attractions around Ypati thus range from traces of fortifications and church architecture to hiking trails and the thermal park in nearby Loutra Ypatis. As you plan your trip, you can consider which of these different interests you would like to shape your stay.
