Lamia brings together a striking castle complex, historic sites and squares in the city centre. As you plan your stay, you can focus on the things that interest you most: archaeology and views, the city’s history, or a stroll through the old town.

Lamia Castle: History, Museum and Views

Lamia Castle is an archaeological site open to visitors, with an Archaeological Museum. Individual visitors and groups are welcomed throughout the year; check local conditions before you travel. The castle dates back to the 5th century BC. Its walls remain in very good condition along their entire length, and its history extends through to the Second World War.

Exhibits from antiquity through to the Byzantine period are scattered around the courtyard. The museum collection covers a different period: the Archaeological Museum of Lamia houses antiquities dating from the Neolithic period to Roman times. Those interested in the region’s long history will therefore find two distinct historical perspectives here—the exhibits in the castle courtyard and the museum collection.

Individual architectural traces also contribute to the character of the complex. The remains of a mosque are located in the castle’s southwestern corner. From above, views extend across the city and the Phthiotis plain. These include the Spercheios Valley, the peaks of Oiti, Kallidromos, Othrys, Parnassos and Giona, as well as the Maliakos Gulf. The view adds a sense of the landscape around Lamia to your visit.

Cultural Events and Historic Sites

Cultural events are often held on the castle grounds, including concerts, scientific conferences and educational programmes. The castle thus combines its archaeological significance with a venue for a range of cultural activities, without assuming that any particular programme will be taking place on your travel dates.

Buildings and monuments around the city also tell the story of Lamia. A number of old houses have been preserved along Odos Ekklision. These include the mansion where baritone Konstantinos Engolfopoulos was born. Below Lamia Castle stands the present-day church of Panagia Archontiki. It was built in 1760 over an older church that had been destroyed by fire. Its history provides a tangible historical point of reference in the city.

The cenotaph of Athanasios Diakos commemorates his sacrifice in the Greek War of Independence. The monument is located on the Kaliva-Bakogianni pedestrian street. You will come across three of Lamia’s oldest churches while walking around the city: they are three-aisled basilicas of particular historical interest. Together, the churches, mansion and cenotaph offer different ways to explore the city’s history, without requiring you to follow a particular route.

Explore the Squares and Old Town on Foot

Four squares lie close together in the centre of Lamia: Plateia Parkou, Plateia Laou, Plateia Eleftherias and Plateia Diakou. Their proximity makes them useful landmarks as you explore the city centre. Each square has its own name, and you can also see them as a connected group of central city squares.

The small square by the Seven Springs is a good place to get to know the old town. Small tavernas and ouzeries surround the square; the mix of establishments may change. Here, a historic cityscape sits alongside a food-focused setting. In the area around Lamia, steps from Plateia Diakou lead to a small green grove.
