When planning your stay in Piraeus, you can include culture, maritime history, and experiences by the water. The following local points of interest offer concrete ideas to help you plan.

Theater and Maritime History

The Δημοτικό Θέατρο Πειραιά is a neoclassical building that was inaugurated on April 9, 1895. After a complete renovation, it reopened to the public on October 22, 2013. The Veakeio Theater stands atop Kastella Hill. For a cultural focus, you can combine theater history with a specific hilltop location.

The permanent exhibition of the Hellenic Maritime Museum includes a model of the Hydra brig “Aris” and a collection of cannons from ships of that era. The museum also presents naval operations and Greek ships from the Balkan Wars through ship models, historical memorabilia, and works of art. You can explore individual maritime collection items as well as a broader historical account through a variety of exhibits.

You can reach the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus via Metro Line 3 to Dimotiko Theatro station; from there, the museum is 800 m away. Transit connections may change, so check the current route before traveling.

Routes and Coastline

The route through the city center covers 1.5 km from the Port of Piraeus to the city center. The route along Piraiki runs for 2.5 km along the peninsula by the water. The route from the port to the center is therefore 1 km shorter, while the Piraiki route offers a different focus, following the waterfront. You can choose between the routes based on your destination and the distance you want to cover.

At Aphrodite Bay on Piraiki, you can see ruins of the Kononian Wall. Along Piraiki, there are traditional restaurants serving Greek cuisine, fish tavernas, ouzeries, and cafés. Individual businesses may change, so check if you have a particular venue in mind.

Freattyda has an organized beach with umbrellas, sun loungers, and beach bars. These amenities may vary seasonally. If a beach visit is part of your plans, take the season into account.

Mikrolimano has a waterfront promenade with restaurants and cafés, as well as views of moored boats and fishing boats. The promenade and boat views are the main features here, while Piraiki offers archaeological and dining attractions in addition to its waterfront route.

Water Sports and Marine Experiences

Water sports in Piraeus include canoeing and kayaking, sailing, inflatable boat rides, water skiing, and windsurfing. Businesses at Zea Marina and in Mikrolimano also offer organized marine experiences with experienced guides. The availability of these activities may change; check in advance if you have a particular experience in mind.

When choosing where to stay, you can weigh up culture, coastal locations, and active experiences. The theater and museum offer specific themes for those interested in culture; the two routes differ in length and course, while the beach, promenade, and water sports offer other points of focus. Start your search for a hotel in Piraeus by considering which of these experiences matters most for your trip.
