Explore Attica through its ancient sites, protected areas and coastal landscapes. When planning your trip, you can focus on cultural history, nature or experiences by the sea. Its archaeological sites tell stories of different eras and traditions, while its wetlands and mountains reveal another side of the region.

Ancient Sites and Museums

The permanent exhibition at the Archaeological Museum of Marathon spans the period from prehistoric times to the Roman era, offering an insight into the region’s history. The objects on display include finds from the Roman sanctuary of the Egyptian gods at Brexiza. Check the museum’s current visitor information before your visit.

At Vravrona, too, the museum and archaeology are closely connected: the Archaeological Museum is near the archaeological site there. Its finds date from the 3rd millennium BC to the 4th century AD. The permanent exhibition illustrates the Sanctuary of Artemis at Vravrona, one of the most significant sanctuaries in the Attica region, and also explores the history of Mesogaia and its surrounding area.

The Acropolis of Athens and its monuments form a significant architectural and artistic complex from ancient Greece. The monuments embody the ideals of the 5th century BC and are regarded as the culmination of ancient Greek architectural development.

Elefsina was home to the Sanctuary of Eleusis, an ancient religious centre dedicated to Demeter and Persephone. The rites held there are known as the Eleusinian Mysteries. At the end of the Sacred Way stands the Telesterion, where the religious ceremonies took place.

Cape Sounion and the Attic Coast

Cape Sounion lies at the southern tip of Attica and is an important archaeological site. The Athenians built the later Temple of Poseidon there in 444 BC; its ruins now stand almost 60 metres above the sea. In suitable weather, you can watch the sunset from the cape, with views stretching from the coasts of neighbouring islands to the mountains of the Peloponnese. Visibility depends on the weather.

The Athens Riviera stretches for 60 kilometres from Piraeus to Cape Sounion. Its coastline includes sandy and pebbly beaches, small coves and rocky inlets, beaches with caves, and rocks for swimming.

Wetlands and Mountain Nature

The Schinias wetland is Attica’s largest coastal wetland and an important stopover during spring and autumn bird migration. It lies in the Marathon plain in northeastern Attica and includes the entire Schinias National Park as well as a surrounding buffer zone. Several reptile species and the endemic fish Pelasgus marathonicus live along the banks of its canals and ponds. Spring and autumn migration offer different opportunities for observation, while the wetland also provides a habitat for various species.

Mount Parnitha, in northern Attica, is a protected area covering 1,413 hectares. The national park was established in 1961, and its core area covers the mountain’s summit region. Parnitha is also the only area in southern Greece where red deer (Cervus elaphus) can survive.

Wine Routes and Outdoor Activities

The wine routes in Mesogeia offer visits to wineries, insights into wine production and tastings of different wines. If you plan a stop, confirm tour details and visitor arrangements directly with the winery.

Outdoor activities in Attica and on the islands include water sports in the region’s clear blue seas. Attica’s hills and highlands offer attractive routes; trekking and climbing are also listed as outdoor activities in Attica and on the Saronic Islands.

Getting There and Choosing a Base
