Varnavas offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: an archaic tower, churches, an Agricultural Folklore Museum, a gorge and recurring cultural events. You can choose how to approach the destination based on whether architectural history, collections, landscape or a particular event date is your priority. This distinction is useful for planning your trip: the buildings and museum offer cultural themes, while the landscape and events provide other points of focus.

Buildings with different features

In the village stands an archaic tower dating from the 5th century BC. Its date provides a specific historical reference point. Nearby are the Byzantine Church of Saint George and the Church of Saint Paraskevi. The Church of Peter and Paul has a hand-carved wooden iconostasis. The buildings can therefore be viewed through different features: the tower stands out for its archaic date, the Church of Saint George for its Byzantine classification, and the Church of Peter and Paul for its carving. The Church of Saint Paraskevi adds another named religious building to the selection. If you are interested in architectural history, these features offer several ways to explore the subject.

Collections and guided tours at the Folklore Museum

The Interactive Agricultural Folklore Museum displays local costumes, textiles, embroidery, household items and farming equipment. Its collection comprises 5,000 exhibits, a significant portion of which visitors can view. The subjects range from clothing and textile work to household and agricultural items. The museum thus brings together several categories of objects rather than focusing on just one type. A guided tour introduces you to the different subject areas in an engaging way. This provides an introduction through the themes, while the collection itself is distinguished by its size and variety of categories.

Gorge, road and beach

The gorge at the entrance to Varnavas is one of the areas of exceptional natural beauty. The road between Kapandriti and Varnavas runs parallel to a gorge with abundant water and plane trees. The entrance to the village and this road therefore provide two points from which to view the landscape. Varnavas beach is 12 kilometres from the village centre. The municipality describes it as one of the cleanest beaches in Attica. Unlike the gorge at the entrance to the village, the beach is a separate destination nearby; the distance puts the village centre and beach in relation to one another.

Cultural events at different times of year

Two events at different locations are among the recurring cultural events. The cultural event “ΠΟΛΙΤΙΣΤΙΚΟΣ ΒΑΡΝΑΒΑΣ” takes place every September in Varnavas. The annual event “…ΤΗΣ ΘΑΛΑΣΣΑΣ ΤΑ ΚΥΜΑΤΑ” is held at Varnavas beach in late July or early August. The events differ in month and location, offering two time windows for planning your trip. If you want to plan your travel dates around a particular cultural event, check the specific event dates before travelling.
