Rõuge brings together a distinctive valley landscape, a chain of seven lakes and several places with historical significance. This offers different ways to plan your trip: focus on the landscape and waters, a hiking route, or historic buildings and traces in the terrain. If you are looking for a hotel in Rõuge, you can first consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay. Natural highlights include the valley, lake chain, hiking trail and observation tower; cultural themes range from a historic farmstead to traces of the hillfort and the church.

Valley, Lakes and Views

The Rõuge ürgorg formed at the end of the Ice Age about 15,000 years ago and lies in Haanja looduspark. At the bottom of the valley is a chain of seven lakes, connected by the Rõuge jõgi: Valgjärv, Liinjärv, Suurjärv, Kaussjärv, Ratasjärv, Tõugjärv and Kahrila järv. Rõuge Suurjärv is Estonia’s deepest lake, reaching a depth of up to 38 metres. The age of the valley and the depth of Suurjärv tell different sides of the same landscape: one points to its formation, the other to the remarkable depth of a single lake. The 30-metre-high Pesapuu vaatetorn observation tower offers views of the landscape and the chain of lakes.

Hiking Trail and Suspension Bridge

The 10-kilometre hiking trail through the Rõuge ürgorg runs between lakes and forests from Rõuge Ööbikuorg to Hinni kanjon. The trail focuses on the route between lakes and forests, while the tower offers views of the landscape and lake chain. This means you can experience the natural landscape in different ways: as a route to hike or from a viewpoint. Inglisild is a 40-metre-long suspension bridge built in 2021. Its construction date provides a more recent historical reference than the valley’s glacial formation.

Historic Traces in Rõuge

At the Rõuge muinastalu open-air exhibition site, visitors can learn about the buildings and way of life of a historic farmstead. Rõuge linnus stood on a hill between Rõuge Ööbikuorg and Rõuge Tindiorg. Its curved rampart and the ditch in front of it are still visible in the landscape. The hillfort burned down at least five times and was rebuilt after each fire. The exhibition site presents rural life; at the hillfort, the focus is on its location, traces in the terrain and the history of repeated fires.

Church and Further Building History

Rõuge Maarja kirik adds sacred architectural history to these historic highlights. It is an old church in the parish centre and was built from fieldstones in 1729–1730 to replace the former church, which had been destroyed in the Great Northern War. The church houses an organ built by the Kriisa brothers in 1930, with 31 stops. The construction dates 1729–1730 and the organ’s date of 1930 show that the church encompasses historical stages spanning more than a century. The Ööbikuoru hüdrotöökoda-muuseum workshop is part of the region’s industrial history; it was established in 1912.
