Discover Võru through its ridges, valleys and hiking trails. The Haanja Heights are among Estonia’s more mountainous regions and are located in Võrumaa. Suur Munamägi rises 318 metres above sea level and is the highest peak in the Baltic states. The observation tower at the summit is 29.1 metres high. On a clear day, the view extends up to 50 kilometres. Today’s tower is the sixth at this location; the first was built in 1812.

Landscapes and viewpoints

Specific heights at other viewpoints also help you get your bearings: Pesapuu Tower is 30 metres high, and its upper platform is 27 metres above the ground. The Härma Mäemine Wall, also known as Keldre Wall, offers a different perspective. It is Estonia’s highest sandstone outcrop, measuring 43 metres high and 150 metres long. The Piusa is described as the river in Estonia with the greatest difference in elevation.

Bodies of water and springs are also part of the landscape. At 38 metres deep, Rõuge Suurjärv is Estonia’s deepest lake. The Rebasmäe Spring, also known as Ilumetsa Spring, is the largest high-water spring in Võru County. The hiking trail in the Piusa River Valley runs within the Piusa River Valley Landscape Protection Area. These varied landscape features give your trip several possible focuses: viewpoints, river valleys or lakes.

Hiking trails of different lengths

The RMK Piusa–Pähni Hiking Trail is 103 kilometres long. One section is described as the most difficult part of the route: it leads up and down through the mountains and valleys of the Haanja Heights and is recommended for hiking on foot. White-green-white trail blazes, hiking signs and information boards mark the route. The Piusa Hiking Trail starts about 50 metres from Piusa railway station. If you plan to travel by train, check current train times separately.

For a different distance, there is the 10-kilometre hiking trail in the Rõuge Primeval Valley, which follows the lakes and the contours of the valley towards Hinni Canyon. The short Ööbikuorg Hiking Trail is 450 metres long and includes stairs and footbridges. The two trails differ not only in length; stairs and bridges are specifically part of the shorter trail’s route description.

A special nature experience awaits on the way to Rebasmäe Spring. The trail follows a boardwalk; first, you descend a long flight of stairs into a flat valley and cross a bridge over Rebasmäe Creek. Hydraulic rams operate in Ööbikuorg, lifting water without electricity. You can visit the Ööbikuorg Hydro-workshop Museum by appointment at +372 522 3206.

Culture, traditions and special visits

Vastseliina Episcopal Castle combines its 14th-century ruins with a history as a sacred pilgrimage site. Another cultural experience is Uma Pido: held every summer, the festival brings locals and visitors together through songs and folk music in the Võro language.

Local production is also part of the region’s character. Võrokes and Setos still make sõir in homes, small dairy-processing businesses, tourism farms and cafés. At Tamula Beach, you can play football and volleyball, climb a rope net, build sandcastles, or sunbathe on the lawn or sandy beach.

A visit to Mooska Smoke Sauna Farm requires advance arrangements. The tour lasts about an hour and a half, includes three distinctive smoke saunas and concludes with a tasting of meat smoked in the smoke sauna. If you are looking for a hotel in Võru, it is best to first decide whether hiking, viewpoints, cultural heritage or a pre-arranged visit will shape your stay.
