Lakeside Trail and Moorland

A 12.2-kilometre health and cross-country ski trail runs around Lake Viljandi. Of this, 1.7 kilometres are paved and 3.5 kilometres are lit. Views of the lake and city accompany the trail, and there are opportunities to observe birds and forest wildlife. Alongside the exercise, the city views and wildlife give the route a nature-focused appeal.

For a shorter route, take the 4.4-kilometre Hüpassaare loop trail, which leads through Soomaa National Park into the Kuresoo bog. Check the trail conditions before setting out. The national park lies on the border between Pärnu and Viljandi Counties. It was established to protect large bogs, floodplain meadows, forests and cultural heritage.

The Ingatsi Study Trail leads to the eight-metre-high Kuresoo bog plateau. An observation tower offers views across the bog and over the Toonoja forest. Several rest areas and benches provide places to take a break along the way, and visitors can swim in a bog pool. This study trail combines viewpoints, places to rest and a distinctive nature experience.

The route lengths at Lake Viljandi and in Hüpassaare offer a practical point of comparison for planning your day: 12.2 kilometres versus 4.4 kilometres. If you would rather head for a viewpoint, the bog plateau and tower on the Ingatsi Study Trail make clear destinations. The trails therefore appeal to different interests, while also letting you experience the landscape beyond the viewpoints.

Music, Museums and Manor Culture

The Mart Saar Museum is located in the composer’s childhood home and showcases his life and work. The Viljandi Traditional Music Center offers a different way to explore music, with extensive materials on traditional music and several workshops. Together, the museum and music center offer different perspectives: the personal life and work of a composer on the one hand, and traditional music and hands-on workshops on the other.

Olustvere Manor is one of Estonia’s most completely preserved manor complexes. The estate includes spaces devoted to crafts and wool, a forge, a ceramics workshop and a distillery. As seasonal opening hours may apply, check visiting arrangements before you go. The variety of workshops and craft spaces offers a distinctive focus within the cultural attractions.

Mulgi Porridge and Experiences on Lake Võrtsjärv

At Muri Manor, you can prepare Mulgi porridge together, cook it on a wood-burning stove and then share the meal. Advance booking is required. Mulgi porridge is a traditional Estonian dish and has been added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Cooking together combines a meal with a regional tradition, so plan it as a booked experience rather than a spontaneous stop.

On Lake Võrtsjärv, you can go fishing with local residents and then prepare dishes from the catch. Sailing courses are also offered on the lake. This gives you a choice of two different activities: a shared fishing and cooking experience, or a course on the water.
