Palumäe by Lake Pangodi: Hiking Trail and Lake Landscape
Accommodation in Palumäe
The Palumägede hiking trail and the rest area of the same name are located by Lake Pangodi in the village of Palumäe. This makes the area a good base for different kinds of outdoor experiences: a hiking route and activities at the rest area.
Hiking trail, wayfinding and rest area
The Palumägede hiking trail is 1 km long and has several steep ascents and descents. When assessing the route, consider both its length and its terrain profile: distance alone does not convey the steepness. Take both features into account when planning.
There is a large information board and eight signposts along the trail. They help you find your way as you get familiar with the hiking route. The parking options also differ in capacity: the first parking lot by the trail has space for one bus or three cars; the parking lot by the information board can accommodate ten cars. If you are planning to come by car, take into account the capacity of the parking lot you intend to use.
The Palumägede rest area offers opportunities for grilling, swimming and camping. If you are planning any of these activities, check the relevant conditions before your visit. This lets you include the rest area’s facilities in your plans without confusing them with the short hiking trail and its inclines.
Lake Pangodi and the protected landscape
Lake Pangodi covers about 115 ha and is up to 11.1 m deep. These figures describe different measurements: the extent of the lake and its maximum depth. It lies in a hilly moraine landscape and has a highly indented shoreline. Thus, the description of the lake encompasses its size, the shape of its shore and the landscape in which it lies.
The Palumägede hiking trail is located in the Pangodi Landscape Protection Area. The area aims to preserve and present the lakes of the Pangodi lake district and the surrounding natural and cultural landscapes shaped by moraine hills. The landscape features mentioned there include Sürjamets forests and meadows.
The Palumägede protection zone also has its own focus: protecting cultural and natural landscapes, including views and habitats of protected plant species. The preservation of Sürjamets forests is also among its conservation objectives. The landscape is therefore shaped not only by the lake, but also by conservation interests that encompass forests, meadows and habitats.
Palumäed is the highest part of the Pangodi Landscape Protection Area. The elevation is about 145 m above sea level and has a relative height of 40 m. The two figures refer to different things: the first gives the elevation above sea level, while the second describes its height relative to the surrounding area. This distinction makes it possible to understand the figures without treating them as the same measurement.
The protected plant Jovibarba sobolifera, a category II protected species, grows on Palumäed. The Pangodi Natura site is located partly in the village of Palumäe. These details add plant and area protection to the picture of the protected landscape.
