Toomalõuka: Coast, Culture and Excursions
Accommodation in Toomalõuka
There are different ways to explore Toomalõuka: its coastal waters, traces of local cultural history, and activities organised by the Toomalõuka Tourist Farm. You can plan your stay around your interests, whether the sea, excursions on land, or the history of the area. The activities also differ in whether they are guided and which part of Saaremaa they cover.
Cultural history and the Toomalõuka Liukivi
The Toomalõuka net shed comes from the village of Toomalõuka in Anseküla Parish and from Lõmala beach. Its origins link a place name with a beach name; both are part of the net shed’s documented history. A road sign points to the Toomalõuka Liukivi. According to Hiite Maja, the path to the stone was open in 2022. Check local access conditions before your visit, as that notice describes the situation at the time.
Coastal waters and access
Mõndelaid rand is a shallow, wave-exposed coastal area associated with Toomalõuka küla. It is listed as open to the public; this status may change. If you plan to visit, check beforehand whether public access is still permitted. Its description as wave-exposed and shallow helps distinguish the coastal area as a destination in its own right from the organised activities offered by the Tourist Farm, which include both activities on and by the sea and excursions on land.
Sea activities at the Toomalõuka Tourist Farm
The farm organises sea kayaking tours in nearby coastal waters. The offer is seasonal and availability may vary. There are two options for fishing trips: they can take place with or without a guide in Lahetaguse Bay and on the nearby sea. A boat for four people is available for the fishing service. The kayaking tours and fishing trips therefore differ not only in the activity itself, but also, for fishing, in the option to choose a guide.
Snorkelling is another activity described: it takes place in the sea visible from the farm. A wetsuit, fins, mask, and snorkel are provided for snorkelling. One snorkelling tour goes by boat to the beach of a small island visible from the shore. If you plan this activity, ask about seasonal conditions and availability. For a guided excursion around the Sõrve Peninsula, you should also confirm the booking details.
Excursions on land
The Toomalõuka Tourist Farm organises walks in nearby forests and along the beach. In autumn, mushroom-picking trips in the forests of western Saaremaa are also available. The season makes a difference here: while walks are described as a general activity, mushroom-picking trips are specifically offered in autumn. If you would like to explore further across the island, there are also cycling tours around Saaremaa. They pass through old villages and places connected with local history. This means that routes in the immediate area are available alongside tours covering a wider part of the island.
A few specific questions can help you choose: would you like to spend time on the water, explore on foot or by bike, or learn about the history of the places? For fishing, you can also choose between a trip with or without a guide; for snorkelling, equipment and a boat trip to the island beach are part of the activities described. Check availability for seasonal activities and confirm the booking details for the Sõrve excursion.
