Juula is shaped by the Rõue jõgi river and historical accounts. The destinations mentioned have different connections to the area: the Paluküla-Loosalu Nature Trail is in Paluküla, near Juula; the Jõepromenaad promenade and Rapla Maarja-Magdaleena Church are in Rapla, not Juula. For trip planning, you can therefore distinguish between local themes and destinations located elsewhere.

River, Local History and Infrastructure

The Rõue jõgi river flows into the Vigala jõgi and is located in the Kõnnumaa loodusala area. Rõue jõgi is also known as Kuusiku jõgi; both names refer to the same body of water. Kuusiku jõgi is therefore not another river, but an alternative name for Rõue jõgi.

Juula is considered a former sauna village. According to local tradition, there was once a manor farm here, whose owner is said to have been a woman named Juula. The Juula road viaduct provides a more recent and precisely dated point of reference: it was built at the intersection of the Rapla–Järvakandi–Kergu road and the Rail Baltica railway line, and opened to traffic in early September 2025. While the sauna-village designation and manor history point to earlier connections with the area, the viaduct marks a dated infrastructure project.

Nature Trail Nearby

The Paluküla-Loosalu Nature Trail follows a boardwalk through a bog to Lake Loosalu. It connects Hiiemäe, the highest peak in western Estonia at 106 m, with the Loosalu bog island and is located near Juula. The trail is in Paluküla, in Kehtna Municipality, not in Juula. As a return trip, it is approximately 15 km long. For trip planning, it helps to distinguish between the two figures: 106 m is Hiiemäe’s elevation, while approximately 15 km is the total distance there and back.

Walks and Culture in Rapla

The Jõepromenaad promenade is in the city of Rapla, not Juula, and is a popular place for walks. Rapla is also home to Maarja-Magdaleena Church, Estonia’s only rural church with two towers. It was designed by Baltic German architect Rudolf von Engelhardt. Ring crosses dating from the 17th century can be seen in the churchyard. The church’s architecture and the historic crosses thus offer distinct cultural points of interest.

A guided walk in Rapla follows the banks of the Vigala jõgi. There is also a walk in the Rapla area that leads to the Vesiroosi bathing area. Those interested in culture can explore the church and its churchyard; the Jõepromenaad promenade and the riverbank are other options for walks.

Regional Activities

Near Juula, the guided tour “Kirik keset küla” passes through Rapla, Alu and Valtu. It is a regional activity, not an activity in Juula itself. Nearby, the Puraviku Tuuleveski Sepikoda blacksmith’s forge also offers insights into the art of blacksmithing.
