Nedsaja: Seto Culture and Landscape
Accommodation in Nedsaja
Nedsaja connects its location in the Mustoja Nature Reserve with local cultural themes such as Seto leelo, music, and village festivals. This gives you different ways to shape your trip: the wider landscape, an annual village celebration, or seasonal activities at Nedsaja külaplats. You can decide whether to plan your stay around the landscape, a specific cultural event, or an activity arranged in advance.
The Mustoja Hills as a landscape setting
The Mustoja mõhnastik is a central part of the Mustoja Nature Reserve, which also includes Nedsaja, and is the largest hill region in southeastern Estonia. This means you can consider Nedsaja both as a specific place and in the context of a larger protected landscape. For your trip, this brings together a local cultural perspective and a regional landscape theme.
Nedsaja’s forests also have a historical dimension: about a hundred years ago, they were home to a training ground for the Estonian armed forces as well as training camps. This episode adds another layer of history to the cultural perspective and points to the forests’ former military use.
Külapäev and musical tradition
Külapäev is an important annual event in Nedsaja, celebrating the village festival of Maarjapäev. At Külapäev, younger and older people sing traditional songs together, accompanied by instruments. If you want to travel specifically for this festival, check the event dates in advance.
The Nedsaja Küla Bänd was formed in 2013 at Nedsaja’s annual village gathering. It performs there and at various festive evenings throughout Estonia. Alongside the recurring village gathering, the band’s performances at festive evenings in different places are another highlight.
Summer activities at Nedsaja külaplats
The Lummo Kati leelolaager takes place in summer at Nedsaja külaplats. Those interested can learn the archaic Seto leelo and how to play the Karmoška there. On the camp evenings, a kirmask featuring Seto leelo and instrumental music is held at the grounds. The camp therefore combines opportunities to learn with evening musical events. Check the specific dates before your trip.
Nedsaja külaplats is also a place for summer days, birthday parties, and summer gatherings. If you are planning to use the grounds, make arrangements in advance.
Guided visits and dancing together
Local nature guide and historian Toomas Valk takes visitors to places in Nedsaja with particularly interesting histories and distinctive natural features. If you are interested in a guided visit, arrange it in advance.
Meel and Toomas Valk teach folk dances to those interested and accompany group singing with instruments. You can invite them to play at celebrations; arrange performances in advance. This offers other ways, in addition to the leelolaager, to include music and dance in your stay.
