Discover Värska: Seto Culture and Nature Trails
Accommodation in Värska
If you are planning an overnight stay in Värska, you can shape your days around different interests: Seto and local history, exercise on trails and at sports facilities, or experiences by the water. Cultural attractions include an exhibition, a church, and a farm museum. For outdoor activities, there is a year-round exercise area, seasonal activities, and hiking trails with two designated lengths.
History and Culture in Värska
The exhibition at the Värska Külastuskeskus – Kindral Reegi Maja connects the history of the Petseri Põhjalaager with Värska’s history as a spa region. The center’s outdoor area has picnic facilities; boats, bicycles, pedal boats, and skates are also available to rent.
The four-kilometer Põhjalaagri hiking trail in Värska is a walking route where you can learn about local cultural and military heritage. The area’s military history is also rooted at Lake Õrsava: on its shore stood the summer training center of the Estonian armed forces, Petseri Põhjalaager, founded in the second half of the 1920s.
The Värska Püha Georgiuse kirik has preserved its original iconostasis from the early 20th century. It includes an icon of Saint George painted on wood in the 17th century. The church’s most important feast is St. George’s Day, celebrated in Setomaa on May 6. It culminates in an afternoon kirmask, or village festival.
The Värska Talumuuseum is a farm complex that offers a good impression of a prosperous Seto farm in the 1920s. It includes a partially enclosed courtyard. In summer, the old threshing barn is used as a spacious craft shop.
You can also discover Seto cuisine from the menu at Seto Tsäimaja. It includes, among other dishes, sõir, suulliim (a cold soup), open pies known as piiragu, oven-baked porridges, and pliinid. These dishes offer a distinctive culinary focus alongside the area’s historical attractions.
Trails and Exercise
The Värska Terviserada is a nature-oriented exercise area that can be used year-round. It passes through gently rolling pine forest and is designed for walks or focused training. The facilities vary by season: in winter, they include a floodlit cross-country ski trail and a toboggan hill. In summer, there is a stadium with a tartan surface, playgrounds, and a climbing tower.
The Pikalombi hiking trails offer a choice of 3.8 or 9.1 kilometers. This gives you the option of a shorter or a considerably longer route. Two possible starting points are the parking lot at Värska Veekeskus or the side of Värska Sanatorium by Lake Värska.
Promenade, Spring, and Summer Boat Trips
The lakeside Värska Promenade is about 300 meters long and has two viewing platforms. Several springs emerge along the promenade; Silmaläte is the largest. Metal cups are provided beside the spring so you can drink the spring water.
In summer, Seto Line trips depart from the small harbor on the beach at Värska Sanatorium. Together with the promenade and springs, the water provides another focus for planning a day in Värska.
