Taevaskoja: Sandstone, River and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Taevaskoja
Taevaskoja can be explored through specific nature and hiking destinations: sandstone outcrops on the Ahja River, a signposted circular hiking trail, places associated with mills and film, and boat trips on the Saesaare Reservoir each offer a different focus. This is helpful when planning your trip, because these activities are not all the same kind of outing. You can take in the landscape from a prominent rock outcrop, plan a clearly defined walking loop, or consider a boat trip as a separate activity.
Natural setting and prominent rock outcrop
Some of the main attractions in the Ahja River Ancient Valley Landscape Protection Area (Ahja jõe ürgoru maastikukaitseala) are sandstone outcrops, forest and scenic views. A particularly distinctive landmark is the Suur Taevaskoda rock outcrop, which rises 22.5 metres above the river. This height gives you an idea of the rock’s scale, while the forest and river shape the wider landscape.
The Taevaskodade hiking trail
The Taevaskodade hiking trail is a signposted, three-kilometre circular route. It starts at the Saesaare car park. From there, the route follows the bank of the Ahja River to Suur Taevaskoda, then returns to the car park along the opposite bank. This means the route is defined by three fixed points: the starting point, the rock destination and the return along the opposite bank. If you are planning to walk the trail, its length and signage are two useful details. The loop offers a different kind of outing from a boat trip, with the signposted walking route taking centre stage.
Mills, a bridge and a film connection
The Taevaskoja-Otteni-Taevaskoja hiking trail has a different thematic focus. It includes the partially preserved Otteni, or Valgesoo, watermill complex, as well as the two-arched Otteni mill bridge. A miniature canyon along the trail became known through the film “Viimne reliikvia”. In addition to structures, the route takes in a film-related site and a distinctive landform. If you choose outings by theme, this hike stands out from the 3 km loop through its combination of a mill complex, a bridge and a miniature canyon; the description of the loop, by contrast, focuses on the riverbanks and Suur Taevaskoda.
A trip on the reservoir and a guided tour
The excursion boat Lonny offers visitors pleasure cruises on the Saesaare Reservoir. Check the timetable separately if you would like to include a boat trip in your day’s plans. A guided tour takes visitors to the sandstone outcrops on the Ahja River, known as Taevaskodad. The two activities differ in their destination and format: Lonny offers a trip on the reservoir, while the tour is a guided visit to the sandstone outcrops.
