Sandstone along the Ahja River, trails through bog and forest, outdoor activities and a year-round events venue: Põlva offers a range of options for planning your trip. You can compare trails by length and landscape; the routes described for fatbike tours change with the seasons. Culture and leisure by the lake also complement the nature experiences.

Sandstone and Hiking Trails along the Ahja River

The Taevaskoda sandstone outcrops and the ancient river are the highlights of the Ahja River Landscape Protection Area. Great Taevaskoda rises 22.5 metres above the river. On the signposted 3 km Taevaskodade circular trail, views of picturesque outcrops and landscapes shaped by natural forces lead into a world of legends, folklore and films. This trail is for pedestrians only.

Other trails offer their own highlights: the approximately 1 km Kiidjärve Ant Trail introduces the way of life of ants. A record-high spruce, standing 42 metres tall, is also located along the trail. The Roiupalu nature trail is 3.2 km long, offers views of the Ahja River and sandstone outcrops, and runs through the Ahja River Valley Landscape Protection Area. To compare trail lengths, the Kiidjärve circular trail is about 1 km, the Valgesoo circular trail is 1.8 km, Taevaskodade is 3 km and Roiupalu is 3.2 km.

Bog Trail and Practical Information

The Valgesoo nature trail is a 1.8 km circular route around the Valgesoo raised bog. The entire trail is accessible by wheelchair or stroller. An observation tower and a campfire site are located right at the start. This circular route therefore combines views of the bog landscape with clearly identified facilities at the trailhead.

Getting to the trails also varies. The Kiidjärve Ant Trail is accessible by bus or train: the bus stop is about 10 metres away, and the railway station is about 50 metres away. The bus to the Roiupalu nature trail stops at Kiidjärve, by the RMK Visitor Centre. By train, take the route to Kiidjärve station, which is 2.9 km away.

Activities Through the Seasons

Fatbike tours are organised in Taevaskoda throughout the year. In spring, summer and autumn, they follow forest trails along the banks of the ancient Ahja River Valley; in winter, they also stop on the ice of Lake Taevaskoda. The landscapes described therefore shift from forest trails along the river valley to the lake in winter. A sled ride on the trails of Taevaskoja takes you through the ancient valley of the Ahja River, past sandstone outcrops and through snow-covered forests.

A canoe trip on the Ahja River starts in Koorvere or Kiidjärve. Summer hikes as part of the tour include a pancake picnic. For a river-themed outing, you can choose between views of sandstone from the land, an activity on the water and a seasonal group stop.

Lake, Café and Events

At Põlva Lake and Beach, you’ll find playgrounds, a skateboarding and roller-skating area, a beach volleyball court and pleasant walking paths. Tillu Cafe serves freshly baked pastries, sweet buns and cakes, light meals, salads, soups and a daily special. These options combine exercise and refreshments without requiring a set itinerary.

For culture, Mooste Folgikoda hosts a variety of events and concerts throughout the year. The options therefore range from nature trails and river activities to a venue with a year-round programme. When planning your trip, you can match these different highlights to the trails, landscapes and activities that interest you.
