The Emakeeleausammas (Mother Tongue Monument) stands beside Kadrina School and is one of the municipality’s important sights. Kadrina combines a local history shaped by the railway station and the church with cultural offerings and practical opportunities for outdoor activities. The town’s historic and active sides are reflected in its buildings, traditions and leisure facilities.

Growing between the railway station and the church

Kadrina alevik (small borough) developed in the late 19th century between Kadrina railway station and Kadrina Church. According to local tradition, the settlement grew particularly after the railway was built. The railway station and the church are both part of the town’s development, but represent different themes: church tradition on the one hand, and development along the railway on the other.

The station buildings also tell the story of different periods. The first station building was erected in 1870. The later building was constructed in 1898 and decorated with rich wooden carvings and ornamentation. In addition to the two construction dates, the later building’s design is another specific detail of the station’s history.

Church and cultural traditions

The present stone Kadrina Church was built on the same site in the 15th century. Above the triumphal arch is an almost life-size wooden crucifix with a figure of Christ, brought from Germany in the 1490s. The congregation traditionally dates its founding to 1231. This date belongs to the congregation’s founding tradition and should be distinguished from the construction date of the present church.

According to the congregation’s current information, services are held in the church at 11 a.m. on the second and fourth Sundays of each month. If you would like to include a service in your plans, check the date before your visit. The church’s history also includes the purchase of a new 18-stop organ from the Church of Jesus in St. Petersburg.

Another cultural landmark is Kadrina Rahvamaja (community centre). The building was completed in 1930 in just five months, with funds raised through donations. The older folk dance group Kahevahel, which includes both men and women, is currently active there. Kadrina Kultuurikoda organises events, brings professional culture to the area, and offers cultural and leisure activities.

Outdoor activities on a range of facilities

Kadrina terviserada (health trail) includes three artificially snow-covered routes measuring 1 km, 1.7 km and 2.4 km. They are used for outdoor activities year-round and for skiing in winter. The distances give you a clear comparison of the routes; their seasonal use also distinguishes between activities throughout the year and skiing in winter.

The terviserada grounds also have a low ropes course and a bike park with jumps and a pump track. These climbing and cycling facilities complement the trails. Kadrina thus offers a range of ways to enjoy active leisure, while its church, monument, railway station buildings and cultural offerings provide a distinct historical and cultural focus.
