Orjaku appeals to travelers who want to combine nature watching with a place steeped in harbor and cultural history. Highlights include the nature trail along Käina Bay, birdwatching opportunities, and a harbor with a long history of use. When planning a trip, you can decide whether you are most interested in the landscape, migratory birds, or the summer activities around the harbor.

Harbor History and Culture in Orjaku

Orjaku was first mentioned in a dated document in 1254. The harbor was already being used as a fishing site in the 17th century. It was also intended as a base for torpedo boats of the Imperial Russian Navy—a planned military role in its history. In the village center, you can find an overview of the history of the village, the manor, the harbor, and the tide gauge house.

Many different cultural events take place at the harbor in summer. Orjaku’s information center also hosts exhibitions during the summer season. Fishing boat trips are available in Orjaku; their seasonal availability may vary. If you are planning such a trip, check in advance whether it is offered during your preferred travel dates. The village house by the harbor serves coffee and pastries during the summer season. Check the current opening arrangements before visiting.

Nature at Käina Bay

Käina Bay has been a protected area since 1962. Its birdlife includes 192 species. The Orjaku nature trail is located in the Käina Bay–Kassari Nature Reserve and runs mostly along the shore of Käina Bay. The trail therefore connects a specific route with a natural area that is also known for birdwatching.

Orjaku Nature Trail: Routes and Directions

The Orjaku nature trail starts at a parking area near Orjaku Bay. The Orjaku section is 2 kilometers long; the shorter Roostiku section is 0.7 kilometers. These figures let you compare the route lengths directly when deciding which trail best fits your plans. A short loop runs through tall reeds to Silmakare.

The nature trail has three observation platforms. A boardwalk about 0.4 kilometers long also runs through the reed bed. Arrows mark the trail, which can be walked without getting your feet wet. The route thus offers several clear points of reference: its length, the sections through the reeds, and the platforms along the trail.

Birdwatching in Spring and Autumn

The Orjaku birdwatching tower is one of the largest birdwatching towers in Estonia. From there, you can watch thousands of migratory birds staying in Käina Bay in spring and autumn. For planning when to visit, the seasonal comparison is especially useful: the birdwatching opportunities described for migratory birds are in spring and autumn, not year-round.

If you are interested in nature and culture on the same trip, Orjaku offers a range of themes side by side: the nature trail and birdwatching on the one hand, and harbor history and summer events on the other. When planning your trip, you can take seasonal offerings such as exhibitions, fishing boat trips, and coffee and pastries into account for your preferred travel dates.
