Jõeranna lies on the shore of Jõesuu Bay and is encompassed by the Paope Nature Reserve. For choosing a destination, the village combines a specific waterside location with its connection to the protected area. Nature, fishing, and accommodation each raise different questions: What is the protected stretch of the stream like, what exception applies to fishing, and where is a named accommodation located?

Shoreline location and protected stream

In the section that belongs to the nature reserve, the Jõeranna stream runs in a natural streambed. This adds a second connection to a body of water alongside the location on Jõesuu Bay, though on a different spatial scale: the bay locates the village, while the statement about the streambed concerns the protected section. Since Paope encompasses the village, its location within the nature reserve is part of the village’s own setting; the natural course of the stream is also a specific feature of this section. For orientation, you can distinguish between the shoreline location and the protected stream: one locates Jõeranna, while the other describes a landscape feature within the nature reserve.

Fishing by area and time period

Fishing is allowed in the Paope Nature Reserve; in the strictly protected Armijõe zone, this permission does not apply from April 1 to June 30. The exception is limited both geographically and temporally: it applies to Armijõe during this period, not generally to the entire nature reserve or the whole year. If fishing is part of your reason for travelling, compare your planned dates with this period and take the named zone into account. When choosing dates, therefore, consider the combination of place and time period, not just the general permission to fish in the nature reserve.

A past project on the Jõeranna stream

The Jõeranna stream also has a historical dimension. A project completed in 2016 to improve its condition aimed to give spawning fish free access to their spawning grounds and, after spawning, a free route to the sea. The fishing rule and the project answer different questions: the rule concerns fishing in a specifically named zone and period, while the completed project had an earlier goal of enabling fish passage.

Accommodation between Jõeranna and Paope

The location of Jõeranna Holiday Lodges is a specific point of reference when planning where to stay: they are situated on the border between the villages of Jõeranna and Paope. From the Jõeranna side, a gravel road about 250 to 300 metres long leads directly to the house. The approximate length refers to this access road. If you are identifying the accommodation by village name, take both place names into account; the description of the access route specifically refers to the Jõeranna side.

Historical connection

Historically, Jõeranna was associated with Kõrgessaare Manor. This connection is part of the village’s history and adds a temporal dimension to its geographic location. It differs from the information about the bay, nature reserve, and stream: rather than describing the landscape or activity rules, it concerns the village’s historical context.
