Naissaare combines island trails with distinctive buildings and a layered military history. When planning a hotel stay, the seasonal ferry connection is an important first consideration: Naissaar does not have a year-round ferry service; several operators run services from May to September. Before travelling, check which service suits your dates. The choice between hiking, cycling and a group tour also depends on the time of year you plan to visit.

Getting to the Island and Getting Around

Visitors are advised to get around the island on foot or by bicycle. There are no bus routes or taxis that can be booked; as transport options may change, check the local situation in advance. When planning your day, consider which routes you would like to walk and whether a bicycle would suit your plans. Cycling makes longer excursions possible and also takes you to places that cannot be reached by car. In winter, the hiking trails become cross-country ski tracks; whether they can be used depends on winter conditions. Check the conditions before planning your route.

Lighthouse and Chapel

The current reinforced-concrete tower of Naissaar Lighthouse was completed in 1960 and is 45 metres high. From there, you can see the wooded island to the south and the silhouette of Tallinn; on a clear day, the view extends north to the coast of Finland. Before your trip, check whether the lighthouse is open to visitors. St. Mary's Chapel of Naissaar is a wooden church consecrated in 1938. It is considered an important example of Estonian church architecture from the first half of the 20th century.

Military History on Naissaar

The Naissaar Military Museum covers topics ranging from the history and development of naval fortresses to the island’s role in the defence systems of different eras. The local population’s life during difficult times is also part of the exhibition. Items on display include shell fragments, weapon components, photographs, Soviet army equipment and Soviet propaganda prints. The exhibition therefore presents technical and military topics alongside the life stories of the local population. Battery 10B consisted of two concrete bases for rotating armoured turrets and a 15-metre-high command post. The command post was completed, and the guns were installed.

Events and Group Tours

Community and cultural events take place at the Naissaar Visitor Centre throughout the year. The programme changes from year to year, so check before your trip which dates suit your stay. Excursions by van are available for groups of ten or more. Depending on the route, they last around two to two and a half hours. A guided tour can be booked in Estonian, English, Russian or Finnish. As commercial services may be seasonal and service details may change, confirm the preferred duration and language when booking. For planning purposes, two different options are available: cycling for longer excursions and the van tour offered to groups of ten or more.
