Äigrumäe: Village History and Paths
Accommodation in Äigrumäe
Äigrumäe is a historic village in Viimsi Municipality, between Mähe and Muuga and south of the Miiduranna railway. The village has no coastline. Archaeological traces, a medieval account, changes to the landscape, and local paths offer insight into different aspects of the village and its history.
Archaeological Traces and Early History
The oldest known traces of human activity in Äigrumäe date from the Early Iron Age, around the beginning of the Common Era. Several small cup-marked stones were discovered in the village and placed under state protection as archaeological monuments. An ancient settlement site discovered in Äigrumäe is also protected as an archaeological monument. Thus, both individual finds and a settlement site form part of the village’s archaeological heritage. Cup-marked stones were generally associated with ancestor worship and fertility magic; however, there is no single agreed explanation of their significance. Their protected status and interpretation should be distinguished: monument protection is a concrete fact, while their cultural interpretation has not been definitively established. In 1219, Danish monks passed through Äigrumäe and baptized people. This medieval event adds another period to the much older archaeological traces. The village’s history therefore spans the Early Iron Age to the 13th century.
Landscape and Location
Äigrumäe lies northeast and north of the sandy area that extends from Iru towards Pärnamäe. Pines were planted on the formerly open sandy area near Äigrumäe. The sandy area helps locate the village, while its former openness and the planting of pines also describe the history of the landscape. Considering the landscape and the village’s location together provides a spatial and historical context.
On Foot and by Bike
There are two specific route details for walking and cycling. There is a paved foot and cycle path between Äigrumäe tee and Varjulille tee. The Muuga foot and cycle path is another local route: it was completed in August 2025, is paved, and is 2.5 metres wide. It makes everyday travel on foot and by bicycle easier for the residents of Äigrumäe. The two details offer different ways to find your bearings: the section between the roads is identified by its location, while the Muuga path is described with specific measurements and its everyday relevance to residents.
Village Square and Playground
The Äigrumäe playground and village square is located at Paju haljak and is a free public playground. The square’s development includes several installations that can be dated: children’s swings were installed in spring 2019, and a climbing frame with two slides was installed there in the same year. The village square’s shelter was completed in August 2020. As well as serving as a free public playground, the square reflects earlier stages in the development of its facilities. It complements the archaeological monuments with another perspective on Äigrumäe: a public playground and the development of local infrastructure over time.
