Velká Lhota: Cultural History and Mountain Landscapes
Accommodation in Velká Lhota
Velká Lhota lies on the northern ridge of the Vsetínské vrchy, above the Bystřička Reservoir. The Beskydy Protected Landscape Area extends across the municipality. Its highest peaks include Vrchhůra, at 693 metres, and Ostrý vrch, at 672 metres. From Velká Lhota, views stretch into the valley of the Rožnovská Bečva and to Rožnov pod Radhoštěm, the surrounding Beskydy Mountains, the Vsetínské vrchy, the Javorníky and the Hostýnské vrchy. A mighty maple tree is a prominent landmark in the municipality.
The Church and the Karafiát Educational Trail
The wooden Evangelical Tolerance Church has no tower and was built in 1783. In 2008, it was declared a national cultural monument. Services and other church celebrations are still held there every Sunday. Please plan your visit around the services and check access in advance.
Jan Karafiát, author of Broučci, was an Evangelical pastor in Velká Lhota from 1875 to 1895. The Jana Karafiáta Educational Trail commemorates his literary connection and ties to the area. It leads to the municipality of Velká Lhota, is 14 kilometres long and has 16 stops. It introduces visitors to the nature and history of the area around Valašské Meziříčí. The trail offers a distinct theme to guide your choice of route, alongside the impressions of the church and landscape.
Other Cultural and Climbing Destinations
In Malá Lhota, a wooden bell tower is among the buildings protected as monuments. The Medůvka sandstone rocks are easily reached from Malá Lhota; climbers use them for practice. If you plan to climb there, check access and conditions locally. The bell tower and the rocks offer different highlights: local architectural heritage on the one hand, and a destination for climbing practice on the other.
Nature and Activities Throughout the Year
Rare orchids and other uncommon flowers grow along the forest edges, including Fuchs's marsh orchid and the military orchid. Rare bird species that breed in the area include the barred warbler, red-backed shrike, whinchat, raven, hazel grouse and ring ouzel. Several less common amphibian species also live in the wetlands and ponds of Velká Lhota.
Several marked hiking trails cross the municipality; check the markings on your route before setting out. The area is increasingly used for mountain biking. In winter, cross-country ski trails run along the ridges; their availability depends on snow conditions. The season is therefore an important factor in planning: cross-country skiing depends on winter conditions, while hiking and mountain biking offer different kinds of outdoor activity.
When choosing a hotel in Velká Lhota, you can start by deciding what you want to shape your stay: cultural history around the church and the educational trail, or landscapes and outdoor activities. If you plan to visit the church, take the Sunday services into account; for cross-country skiing, snow conditions are key.
