Dřínov: Castle History and Cultural Landmark
Accommodation in Dřínov
The castle is the cultural and historical focal point of a stay in Dřínov. Its history reveals distinct phases: its origins as a fortress, the later castle complex and individual surviving structural elements. There is also the Chapel of St. Catherine and regular guided tours of the castle and its cellars. For planning your visit, three questions are especially useful: Which building phases would you like to understand? Would you like to take a guided tour? And will the tower be accessible on the date of your visit?
Castle Park and the History of the Landmark
Dřínov Castle Park is also listed as a cultural landmark in the Central List of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic under registration number 44912/7-5926. Together with the history of the fortress and the castle, this listing shows that the site's cultural significance is not limited to the development of the castle building itself.
From Fortress to Castle Complex
Dřínov Castle originated as a fortress built by Jakub ze Dřínového toward the end of the 14th century. The fortress was first mentioned in writing in 1414. These details should be distinguished when establishing the timeline: the end of the 14th century indicates when it was built, while 1414 marks its first written mention.
The castle has three wings, a tower and a chapel. An entrance tower and a gate wing enclose the courtyard. This makes it possible to consider the layout of the castle wings separately from the structures that enclose the courtyard. The surviving remains of the former fortress include the cellar, the lower part of the castle tower and masonry in the foundations of other castle buildings. The traces are therefore found in different parts of the complex: in the cellar, on the tower and in the foundation masonry.
Chapel of St. Catherine
The ceiling of the castle's Chapel of St. Catherine was decorated with Baroque painting in 1733. This dates to a later phase than the founding of the fortress. According to a description from 2026, the chapel was undergoing long-term reconstruction, and its niches contained sculptural decoration. As its condition may change as the work progresses, ask about the latest status when arranging a guided tour.
Guided Tours and Views from the Tower
Guided tours are held regularly and can be booked through the castle owner. Visitors are shown around the castle and its cellars; the scope of individual tours may vary. If you would like to enjoy the view from the castle tower, check on access when arranging your visit: from the tower, you can see across Dřínov and the surrounding area, but access should be confirmed in advance. This lets you tailor the tour to your interest in the interiors or the view.
