Chvalnov-Lísky: Architecture, History and Nature

For travelers weighing cultural and natural interests when choosing a place to stay, three themes stand out in Chvalnov-Lísky: the church in Chvalnov, the fortification site near Hradisko, and the Přehon Natural Monument. Each represents a different focus: the church is characterized by its architecture, the fortification site by the remains of ramparts, and Přehon by its heat-loving flora. When planning, you can decide which kind of connection to the area matters to you.

The Church as a Landmark of Chvalnov

The Church of St James the Greater is a prominent landmark in Chvalnov. Its floor plan is rectangular and single-nave; at the eastern end, the presbytery has a polygonal termination. “Single-nave” means that the church has one main nave and no side aisles. The presbytery is the choir area at the eastern end, which here ends in several sides. Together, they form a clearly longitudinal structure with a articulated eastern end. On the west side, a tall, three-story prismatic tower with the entrance portal dominates the view. “Prismatic” describes a geometrically angular shape; the three stories divide the tower vertically. The western tower and eastern presbytery mark the two ends of the building.

A Protected Complex

The protected complex includes the church with its stairs and enclosure, statues of St John of Nepomuk and St James, and the associated plots of land. The scope of protection therefore extends beyond the church building alone and includes these features and properties. The church should thus be understood as an ensemble comprising the building and its associated elements.

Written Records and Early Settlement

The first written records of Chvalnov date from 1382. Archaeological finds indicate that the cadastral area of Chvalnov was settled much earlier. These represent two different perspectives on time: 1382 marks a written record, while the finds point to an earlier settlement. This distinction is important for understanding the area: the year does not mark the beginning of settlement, but the first written records of the place.

The Fortification Site near Hradisko

Another historical feature is the Chvalnov-Lísky fortification site near Hradisko. Remains of ramparts have survived there. Ramparts are defensive earthworks; their remains identify the site as a different kind of historical trace from the church. At the church, you can make out the floor plan, tower, and portal, while the fortification site is about the surviving elements of a defensive structure. This lets you consider sacred architecture and historical fortifications as distinct aspects of local history.

Přehon and Its Heat-Loving Flora

Přehon lies about 100 meters northeast of Chvalnov. The Natural Monument has a small area of heat-loving flora; the Yellow Orchid is common there. “Heat-loving” describes plants that favor warm growing conditions. The approximate location northeast of Chvalnov and the plant species mentioned offer different points of reference: a geographic location and a specific ecological feature. Alongside the church’s architecture and the ramparts, this plant life offers a distinct natural-history perspective.
