Zárubice: Village Green, Pond and Cycle Route 401
Accommodation in Zárubice
Get to know Zárubice through three distinctive features: its preserved village green with a small bell tower, the pond behind the village, and cycle routes that pass through the municipality. Together, they bring built heritage, waterside scenery and cycling into focus. If you are looking for a hotel in Zárubice, these highlights can help you tailor your stay to your interests.
Pond and Waterside Landscape
Klárka Pond lies behind Zárubice, on the road towards Hrotovice. It is commonly called Zárubický, or “Podevsí”. At 5.2 hectares, it is one of the largest ponds in the Třebíč District. The different names refer to the same body of water and can help you find your way if you come across either name along the way.
A varied littoral zone was created at the far end of Zárubický Pond to encourage the development of wetland plants and animals. This design therefore concerns not only the water but also the habitat around the pond. Zárubický is used for recreation. If you are planning to swim, check the current bathing conditions on site.
Cycling Through Zárubice
The signposted long-distance Cycle Route 401 passes through Zárubice. Local cycle routes in the surrounding forests connect to it. When planning a ride, you can think of the long-distance route through the village and the local forest trails as connected but distinct sections of a route.
The Farmer’s Trail from Hrotovice to Jaroměřice also passes through Zárubice. Its route goes via Odunec and Zárubice to the Na Skalným forest complex, which lies outside the built-up area of the village. This cycle tour therefore offers different landmarks from Route 401: Hrotovice and Jaroměřice as its starting and ending points, and Na Skalným as its destination at the end of the route. Check local route conditions before setting out on a specific ride.
Village Green and Architectural History
The small bell tower was built in 1846 and stands in the middle of Zárubice’s picturesque, preserved village green. The memorial to the victims of the First World War was erected in 1929; a statue of a weeping woman stands in the foreground. The two structures have different associations: the bell tower stands on the village green, while the memorial commemorates the victims of the First World War.
The former school building was built in 1898. Part of the building served as an inn and cultural hall. Traditional houses in Zárubice were typically decorated with relief ornamentation on their façades in the form of small squares above windows and gateways. Thus, local architectural history includes not only individual buildings but also a specific façade motif.
Excursions in the Surrounding Area
In spring 2004, Toulavé kolo began exploring the nearby area on cycling trips. Its destinations included the vanished medieval settlement of Mstěnice near Hrotovice. The Zárubičtí chodci group decided to follow Toulavé kolo’s example and also plan walking trips in the surrounding area. The initiatives thus differ in how they travel: Toulavé kolo explored the area by bicycle, while Zárubičtí chodci considered excursions on foot.
