Veselý Žďár: Local History and Nature
Accommodation in Veselý Žďár
Veselý Žďár offers a cultural and historical focus, with several memorial sites, the Chapel of Saint Wenceslas, and connections to local nature. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in the village, this overview of the destination can help you identify your interests. Its themes span different periods: the monuments tell a story ranging from remembrance of liberation to the reconstruction of a memorial to the fallen. The landscape and traditional events are also part of the village’s character.
Local History and Monuments
The first documented mention of Veselý Žďár dates from 1379; at the time, old records referred to it as “Zdar.” A notable later date is 28 October 1919, when the Freedom Monument commemorating liberation was unveiled on the village green by the pond in front of Mr. Kubát’s inn. The local stonemason Jan Krupička, from house no. 86, carved it from a broken granite block. The occasion, the material, and the craftsman are all specific details of its history.
During the Second World War, the monument had to be removed and dismantled on the orders of the gendarmerie. It was stored at Karel Pecha’s, house no. 82, and put back in place on 28 October 1946 at 2 p.m. It was therefore reinstalled on the same calendar date as its unveiling, but 27 years later. The memorial to the fallen of the First World War is a different commemorative monument: it was reconstructed in 2001 based on a design by Ing. arch. Voigstová. The two monuments thus represent distinct purposes: commemorating liberation and remembering the fallen of the First World War.
Chapel, Landscape, and Nature
The Chapel of Saint Wenceslas stands beneath the canopies of four linden trees. In 1933, it was repaired with proceeds from a door-to-door collection and consecrated again. It adds a distinct strand of local history to the monuments: the lindens shape its surroundings, while the repair and reconsecration mark a specific historical milestone. The funding through the door-to-door collection is also part of the recorded details.
An arboretum stands on the site of the former poplar trees; there is also a shelter in the school garden. A 2025 municipal newsletter reported that a white-tailed eagle was nesting in the cadastral area of Veselý Žďár. For travelers interested in nature, this adds another perspective on the village alongside its monuments and chapel.
Pilgrimage and Local Hospitality
Traditionally, assistance with serving refreshments is provided during the pilgrimage. A tasting of dishes made from family recipes was planned for a neighborhood festival in 2021. The information differs in its time reference: the pilgrimage is associated with a tradition, while the tasting is linked to a specifically dated festival. Together, they show the role hospitality plays at local events, without suggesting that both references describe the same kind of event.
