Těchobuz – Castle History and Heritage Trails
Accommodation in Těchobuz
This can help you decide before your trip whether you would rather focus on the history surrounding Bernardo Bolzano, the town’s architecture, or nature topics along a trail.
Castle history and Bolzano’s legacy
Těchobuz Castle is built on the foundations of a 14th-century fortress. Bernardo Bolzano stayed at the castle from 1823 to 1848. The Bernarda Bolzana Gallery is housed in a former castle barn; its cellar and original structural framework have been preserved. Bolzanova studánka can be reached from the castle via the Po pamětihodnostech Těchobuze educational trail. Bolzano used the spring for work and rest. A local legend also connects it with the Hoffmann family: according to the story, Bolzano found the Hoffmanns’ lost daughter there. His stay at the castle, his advocacy for the school, and the legend about the spring illustrate three different connections to Bolzano: personal presence, support, and local tradition.
Historic buildings in the town
Other buildings also reflect different eras and styles. The former school in Těchobuz is a grand Neoclassical building erected in 1823 at Bernard Bolzano’s urging. The cemetery Church of St. Mark is a single-nave Gothic church, first mentioned in 1338; a striking early Baroque renovation gave it its present appearance. Built in 1826, the cemetery Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk is in the Empire style and has a circular ground plan. It served as the Hoffmann family crypt. A different form of architecture is represented by the polygonal, drive-through timber-frame barn: a remarkable example of vernacular architecture and a rare historic building of its type in the Vysočina Region. It was fully reconstructed in 2013 and 2014. In reference to the church, “single-nave” describes an interior with one nave; the circular ground plan describes the chapel’s round layout.
Two educational trails, two themes
The Po pamětihodnostech Těchobuze educational trail consists of two circular routes. The shorter one runs through the village and offers insights into its historic buildings. Mozaikou krajiny takes a different approach: the 2.5-kilometre educational trail connects Těchobuz to Kozák Pond via a blue-marked hiking trail. Six information panels introduce the local fauna and flora, as well as the Pacovská pahorkatina uplands. The choice of themes therefore contrasts the village’s historic buildings with the second trail’s nature and landscape topics.
The castle park as a landscape
Těchobuz Castle Park is a 19th-century landscape park. A central hornbeam avenue and an irregular network of paths define its layout. The park’s design thus complements the architectural history and educational trails with another, landscape-focused perspective on Těchobuz.
