Skuhrov: Church, Chapel and Local History
Accommodation in Skuhrov
Skuhrov is a destination for travelers who want to include church and local history in their choice of where to stay. The main attractions are the Church of St. Nicholas and the cemetery surrounding it; a chapel, a Baroque rectory and a granite cross also tell of different historical traces. The architectural details give you a concrete impression of the features that make this place distinctive.
Church of St. Nicholas and Cemetery
The first written mention of Skuhrov dates from 1352. Even then, it was a thriving settlement with a church and its own parish. St. Nicholas was originally built as a Gothic church in the first half of the 14th century. The church tower was added in the Empire style in 1811. These dates clearly distinguish the medieval origins from a later architectural addition.
The church stands in the center of Skuhrov on a small hill and is surrounded by the cemetery. A bricked-up Gothic portal survives in the south wall of the nave. The cemetery also contains a rectangular Baroque mortuary chapel dating from 1707 to 1712. The building history of this area thus spans from the Gothic portal to the Baroque mortuary chapel.
Inside St. Nicholas are a statue of the Suffering Christ from the mid-18th century and a stone baptismal font dating from around 1700. Mass is held twice a week as well as on public holidays. If you are planning to attend a service, please check the current times; the schedule may change.
Chapel, Rectory and Granite Cross
Another historic stop is the rectangular Chapel of St. Florian on the road to Havlíčkův Brod. It was built in 1783. Its façade is articulated by pilasters supporting a cornice and a semicircular gable. Pilasters are flat, wall-attached elements used to articulate a building; here, they help structure the chapel’s façade.
A damaged granite cross with beveled edges stands in front of the gate of house No. 64. According to local tradition, it is one of the crosses that once lined the Haberská trade route. The Baroque rectory in Skuhrov was built by V. Smekly in 1728. The cross and rectory thus add local tradition and a specific building history to the details about the church and chapel.
Getting There and Hiking Trail
Road I/38 runs along the edge of Skuhrov, connecting Kolín, Havlíčkův Brod and Jihlava. Bus services connect the village with Habry and Havlíčkův Brod. If you are traveling by bus, check the timetable for your travel day. A route description updated in 2011 mentions a yellow-marked hiking trail through Skuhrov from Lipnice nad Sázavou to Lysá. Before setting off on a hike, check whether the trail is still marked that way. The road, bus services and hiking trail offer different reference points for planning your journey; which ones are relevant to you depends on the route you choose.
