Matějov can be explored when planning a trip through two themes: the ponds and their wetlands, and the town’s religious buildings. Matějovský rybník lies within the municipality and the cadastral area of Matějov; Babínský rybník is also located in the cadastral area. The Chapel of the Name of the Virgin Mary and the Boží muka wayside shrine, by contrast, put building history and architecture in the foreground. If you would like to consider local history as well as the natural environment, you can weigh these interests separately when planning.

Wet Meadows and Ponds

Matějovský rybník is surrounded by wetlands and waterlogged meadows with species-rich sedge stands. The meadows are home to bogbean (Menyanthes trifoliata) and hare’s-tail cottongrass (Eriophorum vaginatum). The natural environment here is defined not only by the pond, but also by the meadows and their specific plant life. If you include nature in your travel plans, you can distinguish between the pond and the wet meadows; both aspects belong together.

Babínský rybník

Babínský rybník is also located in the cadastral area of Matějov. It has a water surface area of 8.3 hectares and lies in the headwaters of the Oslava. Its water is acidic and peat-stained; sedges, bulrushes, cottongrasses and peat mosses grow along its shores. The two bodies of water therefore differ in the natural features described: at Matějovský rybník, the focus is on wetlands and plants of the waterlogged meadows, while at Babínský rybník it is on the water’s characteristics and shoreline vegetation. The area of 8.3 hectares adds a specific measure of size to this description.

Nature Along the Babín Educational Trail

The Babín Educational Trail passes through the best-preserved natural areas of the Žďárské vrchy. It explains the special role of forests, bogs, wetlands and ponds in nature. Rather than describing a single body of water, the trail focuses on several types of natural areas and their importance. Whether your travel interests center on individual species or broader natural systems, the trail’s thematic focus offers an additional way to choose what to explore.

Chapel and Wayside Shrine

The building history of the Chapel of the Name of the Virgin Mary in Matějov can be traced through two dates. Construction began in 1907, based on plans by master builder Josef Křelina from Zámek Žďár. The interior fittings were completed in 1910, and the chapel was consecrated in the same year. The dates therefore mark different stages: the start of construction in 1907, and the completion of the fittings and consecration in 1910.

Another religious building is the early Baroque stone column wayside shrine known as Boží muka. It stands on the edge of Matějov, on the road to Nové Veselí. A four-sided chapel with niches crowns the shrine. While the Chapel of the Name of the Virgin Mary is characterized by its construction and consecration history, Boží muka stands out for its location and the specific form of its structure.
