Malý Beranov is shaped by its location on the Jihlava River and its local cultural life. When choosing a destination, you can focus on different aspects: the river landscape and hiking trails, a cycling route through the village, or cultural traditions such as the Masopust parade and the spring hiking march. The landscape, architectural history and event traditions give the village several distinct themes for a stay.

Between the River Bend and the Plateau

Malý Beranov lies on the flat inner side of a river bend in the canyon-like valley of the Jihlava River. This location made access to the river easier from the surrounding plateau. The water level of the Jihlava River at Malý Beranov is about 460 metres above sea level; small elevations on the surrounding plateau reach more than 550 metres.

The elevations refer to different parts of the area around the village: the river and the surrounding plateau. Together with its position on the inner side of the bend, they give a clear picture of the local landscape, which differs from an open, level setting. If you also consider a destination’s geographical character when choosing where to go, Malý Beranov has a clear connection to the Jihlava River and its valley.

Hiking Trails and Cycling Route

The Maloberanovský Čochtan is a traditional spring hiking march. The documented circular route starts and ends in Malý Beranov, passes through Petrovice, Puklice, Studénky and Kosov, and is 13 kilometres long. The route may change between editions. The 2026 edition was the 50th staging of the march. The Čochtan thus combines a local tradition with a clearly described circular route and a long event history.

Beyond this circular route, there is also a hiking trail around Malý Beranov that passes other rock formations used by climbers. A former quarry is also visible beyond the village along the direction of the hiking trail. Those interested in the landscape will find different perspectives on the surrounding area here: the river bend, rock formations and a former quarry.

For cyclists, the Jihlava–Třebíč–Raabs cycling route passes through Malý Beranov. It complements the hiking options described above with a regional cycling connection. This distinguishes two different ways to explore: a documented circular hike with named stops and a cycling route that passes through the village.

Local Festivals and Architectural History

The Masopustní průvod, the local Masopust parade, takes place every year and ends at the cultural centre. The traditional spring hiking march and the parade represent different forms of the local events calendar: one is a circular route on foot, the other a parade with a named endpoint in the village.

The Maloberanovské slavnosti is a traditional local festival. The programme for the 2026 edition included children’s competitions, various attractions, refreshments and an evening rock concert by the group Vokrock. Individual programme items may vary. So if you plan to time a trip around a festival, check the date and programme for the relevant edition.

Another point of cultural and historical interest is the Church of the Sacred Heart of the Lord. It was built and consecrated on 8 October 1939; its construction was funded exclusively by donations. The date and funding shed light on two aspects of the same architectural history: when the church was built and how its construction was financed. Together with the local traditions, this adds a specific history of the village to its landscape.
