Discover Kněževes
Accommodation in Kněževes
Kněževes combines architectural history with a short themed walk and a longer cycling route. This gives you a practical choice when planning your stay: you can get to know the town through its historic architecture, include the Hřibový háj walk or consider the Mlynářská route as a cycling option. Local cultural landmarks and views of the landscape provide further points of interest to complement these activities. You can structure your day around your preferred focus: local history, views or exercise.
Hunting Lodge and Museum
The oldest part of the hunting lodge in Kněževes is a medieval fortress that has been preserved in late Gothic form. Remnants of the original interior plaster decoration remain. The hall of the hunting lodge features an exceptionally well-preserved authentic wooden beam ceiling with rich moulding and carvings.
The Regionální muzeum Horního Pooslaví in Kněževes nad Oslavou is involved in restoring and using the hunting lodge. It was established on 1 January 2013 as a collecting, scientific and exhibition museum. It presents the history and natural heritage of the Upper Oslava region, particularly Radostínsko, Měřínsko and Křižanovsko. Its subject matter therefore extends beyond local architectural history: the hunting lodge represents a specific building, while the museum’s work also explores regional history and natural heritage.
Walk and Cycling Route
The Hřibový háj walk starts in the village square in Kněževes. There are numerous wooden mushroom sculptures there, accompanying the route. The walk also includes the Na Kříbu viewpoint on the roof of a former water tower. From there, you can look out over Kněževes and Bohdalovsko Nature Park. The transition from the mushroom theme in the village square to views of the town and nature park gives the walk a clear thematic arc. The route is 3 km long, takes about an hour and is suitable for preschool-age children. Its length and duration make it easy to include as a manageable activity in your plans.
The signposted Mlynářská cycling route runs between Nové Město na Moravě and Kněževes and is 38.5 km long. Whereas Hřibový háj is a 3 km walk that starts in the village square in Kněževes and takes about an hour, Mlynářská connects two named places along a signposted cycling route. This makes it easy to plan a short local walk and a considerably longer cycling route as two distinct options.
Local History in the Landscape
The first written record dates from 1370; Kněževes belonged to the Mostiště estate in the 14th century. A chapel dating from the 18th century has a small bell tower; its altarpiece depicts Saint Florian. Wayside shrines are cultural landmarks that shape the landscape around Kněževes. Local history can thus be encountered on several levels: in written records, at a religious building and through cultural landmarks in the landscape.
