Discover Veliká Ves: Village Ponds, Church and Castle History
Accommodation in Veliká Ves
Veliká Ves brings together a waterside landscape, sacred architecture, castle history and archaeological traces. If you are looking for a hotel in Veliká Ves, these themes can help you choose a destination: you can get to know the place through its stream and village square as well as its buildings and early settlement history.
Stream and Village Ponds
The Dubá stream flows through Veliká Ves and feeds two ponds on the village square, one on either side of the road. The village lies upstream of the confluence of the Dubá and Leská streams. In the past, the Dubá powered a mill in Veliká Ves. Thus, the present-day course of the stream and the historical use of its water exist side by side: the ponds and confluence shape the landscape around the village, while the mill recalls an earlier use of the stream.
Church and Castle: Two Building Histories
The Church of St. James is an 18th-century Baroque church, built on the site of an older predecessor. Statues of St. John of Nepomuk and St. Augustine, dating from 1773, stand in front of its west portal. The bell tower also has distinctive timepieces: a sundial is on its south side, and the face of a mechanical clock is on its east side. The figures and two clock details add specific details to the story of the church building.
Veliká Ves Castle tells a different building story. The Augustinians of Karlovy Vary built it between 1662 and 1762 as the provost’s summer residence; from 1890 to 1896, it was remodelled in the Neo-Renaissance style. Compared with the Church of St. James, the buildings reveal different architectural trajectories: a Baroque sacred building and a castle with a long construction period and later stylistic changes.
Archaeological Traces of Early Settlement
Archaeological finds in the cadastral area of Veliká Ves attest to settlement during much of prehistory and the early historical period. The largest concentration of archaeological finds came from the sand pit west of the village, where advance archaeological rescue excavations took place in 1974 and 1975. These finds add a much earlier period to the history of the village than the building phases of the church and castle.
Events and Road Connections
The castle’s former farmyard is now used for agrotourism and various social events. If you are interested in a specific offering or event, check locally whether attendance is possible. The St. James Pilgrimage Festival took place in 2006 and every year from 2015 to 2022. Check dates for a future visit separately if an event is important to your trip.
One local road connection is relevant for getting around: a road from Chotěbudice connects Veliká Ves to the Kadaň–Podbořany highway. This places the village on a specific interurban road connection.
