Libědice: Church of St. Vitus, Calvary Group and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Libědice
Libědice combines a clear connection to cycling with sacred architectural and art history. For trip planning, the highlights are easy to distinguish: routes and cycling on the one hand, historic architecture and works of art on the other.
Cycling and landscape
Cyclists can reach Libědice by turning off cycling route 3080 towards the village. Check the route conditions before setting out. A notice dated 22 May 2026 also describes a marked walking and cycling route intended to make walks and outings easier to navigate. Before using it, check whether the route is currently marked. The two route references help with different planning questions: route 3080 leads towards the village, while the marked walking and cycling route is intended to make walks and outings easier to navigate.
There is a public electric bicycle charging station in the garden of the Kotva restaurant. Cycling tourists and local residents can charge for free during a stop; check whether the charging station is available before your trip. The Liboc is the only watercourse in the cadastral area of Libědice that has a permanent flow year-round.
Church and sacred art
The Church of St. Vitus was built between 1682 and 1694 on the site of an earlier building first mentioned in 1358. The present church has been preserved in almost unchanged form. The year 1358 refers to the earlier building, not to the construction of the present church. A fortress may have been built below the church in the 1570s.
The Calvary group is a late Baroque work in Chernovice sandstone, dating from 1738; the artist is still unknown. After 1975, it was moved from the village of Brany to Libědice. The date of creation and the transfer mark different stages in the history of the work. The ensemble includes a cross with the body of Christ, the kneeling Mary Magdalene, and figures of the Virgin Mary and Saint John on the pedestal.
Other works depicting the Virgin Mary also have their own dates: a Baroque column with a statue of the Virgin Mary dates from 1704. Another statue of the Virgin Mary in Libědice dates from 1724 and is associated with Vetter. The two dates refer to different works. The statue of the Virgin Mary from 1704 predates the 1724 statue; the Calvary group from 1738 was created later than both.
Traditions and local history
The end of the carnival season is part of Libědice’s traditional festivities. If you would like to plan your visit around it, check the exact event date in advance. Another historical connection is Libědice Castle, where Marie Zuzana Smyslovská stayed at least occasionally.
