Úpohlavy lies in the Český středohoří landscape and is recommended as a starting point for walks and hikes. For trip planning, consider routes of different lengths: a route of about 2 km to Lucký mlýn, trails to Házmburk and Košťálov, and a circular route approximately 30 km long. There are also designated cycling routes and individual cultural and landscape features.

Hiking routes of different lengths

The municipality recommends an approximately 30 km circular route from Úpohlavy via Házmburk, Třebenice, Košťálov, Chodovlice and Lucký mlýn, returning to Úpohlavy. A shorter trip runs from Úpohlavy to Házmburk: the route is approximately 4–5 km long and can be covered on foot or by bicycle. Košťálov is about 6 km away, also on foot or by bicycle. Distances may vary depending on the exact starting point.

The two destinations also differ in elevation profile: the climb to Košťálov is considered moderately difficult, with a steeper final section. The southern slopes of Košťálov Hill are protected as a natural monument. Házmburk is a castle ruin on a 418 m-high volcanic cone; it offers views of the Český středohoří, Polabí and Poohří. For a shorter outing, a route of about 2 km leads from Úpohlavy to Lucký mlýn and is considered an easy walk. This gives you options of varying lengths: a shorter walk, a steeper climb and a longer circuit that passes several of the places mentioned.

The red-marked Zlatá stezka Zemí hradů hiking trail passes through the southwestern part of Úpohlavy. Check the current trail markings on site before setting out. The exact starting point also matters when planning a route based on the distances given.

Cycling and regional routes

The Lovosice–Házmburk–Lovosice cycling route passes through Úpohlavy. It is about 50 km long and considered moderately difficult; check the conditions and current route markings before setting off. Another option is cycling route 3118, which passes through Úpohlavy between Sulejovice and Třebenice.

For a regional return trip to Lovosice, cycling routes 3119 and 3118 are described via Lkáň, Třebenice, Úpohlavy and Sulejovice. This puts route 3118, which passes through Úpohlavy, in the context of a longer route. The approximately 50 km circular route to Lovosice and Házmburk is much longer than the approximately 4–5 km route from Úpohlavy to Házmburk. Check current conditions and route markings before setting off.

Mill, chapel and quarry

Lucký mlýn lies between the municipalities of Chodovlice and Úpohlavy. The former watermill has a Baroque building containing technical equipment, most of which dates from the early 20th century. Úpohlavy is also home to the Late Baroque Chapel of the Holy Trinity. It has been protected as an immovable cultural monument since 1958. Its triangular gable leads directly into a bell tower—a distinctive architectural detail that sets the chapel apart from the former mill’s technical equipment.

Úpohlavy Quarry is designated as a geotope, a geotourism attraction and an excursion site. Its significance is also linked to paleontological discoveries from the Upper Cretaceous. However, access is only permitted with special authorization, as the area includes military land, a quarry and private property. Check access restrictions in advance; do not plan a visit without the required special authorization.
