Tašov is an old Slavic foothill village in the central part of the Bohemian Central Highlands. Its elongated settlement lies in a hollow at the southeastern foot of Mount Kukla, which is 674 meters high. Both the form of the settlement and its prominent elevation are important for understanding its geographical setting.

Landscape and village character

The Tašov area lies within the České středohoří Protected Landscape Area. Its natural features include extensive woodland and a varied landscape with rugged relief. At 674 meters, Kukla provides a specific point of reference; the forests and relief describe the wider natural setting of the area. This distinguishes the village’s location at the foot of the mountain from the landscape features of its surroundings.

Several examples of vernacular architecture have been preserved in the village center. These include partly two-storey log or half-timbered houses with porches and projecting sections. There are also boarded gables and recessed arcades decorated with carvings. The architectural features range from the construction and height of individual houses to details on gables and arcades. Log and half-timbered houses represent different construction methods: in log construction, beams are stacked on top of one another; in half-timbering, a wooden frame supports infilled panels.

A distinct landmark in the history of local architecture is the Baroque Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene. Built in 1707, it stands about 0.7 km southeast of Tašov on a wooded rise along the road to Rýdeč. Its five-sided central-plan design and dome give it a different ground plan from the log and half-timbered houses in the village center. A rectangular sacristy is located on its north side. The date and architectural form give the chapel a different historical and architectural context from the houses, which are described through their construction features.

Tašovské skály: rock formation and routes

Tašovské skály is a locally significant climbing area. The rock formation comprises 17 hard phonolite masses, weathered in places. It is important to distinguish between the different measurements: 17 is the number of masses, the rocks are up to 15 meters high, and most routes are 5 to 10 meters long. The height refers to the rocks, while the length refers to most of the routes. This lets you consider rock size and route length as separate measures of the area.

Walking and cycling nearby

Near Tašov, Dlouhý vrch has a marked main viewpoint and three hiking trails. A marked cycle route starts at the Tašov–Ovčárna signpost at the foot of Dlouhý vrch, then reaches the road near Myštice.

For planning, these offer different points of reference: for walking, the viewpoint and three trails on Dlouhý vrch are the main features. The cycling route, by contrast, can be traced by its start at Tašov–Ovčárna, its course along the foot of the mountain, and the road near Myštice. Walking and cycling are therefore not only different activities but also lead to different named landmarks.
