Svahová’s Early Working and Industrial History
The first written mention of Svahová dates from 1563. The settlement was probably founded in the mid-16th century in close connection with the alum works in Jirkov. The two dates refer to different things: 1563 is the year of the first written mention, while the settlement was probably founded in the middle of the century. In its early days, Svahová was mainly home to forestry workers who worked for the alum works.
The glassworks Georghütte, also known as Jiřího huť, is part of the area’s industrial history. The complex included a steam engine with a stamping mill, a glassworks, tool sheds, stables, and residential buildings for 16 families of glassworkers. The residential buildings also bring the social dimension of the complex into view: glass production included housing for workers’ families.
