Okounov: Nature, Local History and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Okounov
A stay in Okounov can be planned around three distinct themes: landscape and nature, local history, and outdoor activities. Each has specific points of interest—from the location within a bird protection area to a cycling route and traces of historic buildings or terrain features. This lets you decide in advance which theme to focus on when planning your trip.
Nature and landscape
The entire municipality of Okounov, including all four cadastral areas, lies within the Doupovské hory Bird Protection Area (CZ0411002). One specific landscape area is Pastviště u Okounova: this rocky ridge is located on a former communal pasture. It has narrow-leaved dry grasslands and extensively managed hay meadows in the lowlands and hills. A population of dwarf cherry (Prunus fruticosa) is also found at Pastviště. The area’s natural features range from the setting of the entire municipality to specific habitats and a named plant species.
Cycling route and water sports
Cycling route No. 3004 runs from Vejprty to Okounov. It is 25 kilometres long, paved, classified as easy, and suitable for all types of bicycles. The description was published in 2019, so check local conditions before setting out. Its length, surface and difficulty rating give you specific criteria for deciding whether to include this cycling trip in your plans.
The Ohře is another recreational feature: it is an important leisure attraction in the region and is used for water sports. The cycling route and the river appeal to different interests—with cycling, the focus is on a route with specific measurements, while the Ohře is notable for its regional significance for recreation and water sports.
Cultural history in the townscape
A parish church had existed in Okounov since at least 1363, and its style was reportedly Romanesque. The church burned down in a major fire in 1863, and reconstruction began the same year. It was consecrated on 4 November 1866. These dates distinguish the church’s early history from the events of its later reconstruction.
Okounov is also home to a Baroque sculptural group dating from 1707, depicting the Virgin Mary, Saint Stephen and Saint Lawrence. Another form of cultural heritage is the folk bell shrine Zvonička vidlák, dating from the mid-19th century. A small bell hangs from a simple support in the natural fork of a tree beneath a plain wooden roof. The church, sculptural group and bell shrine therefore differ in age, form and design.
The former fortress site of Okounov lies east of the present-day Neo-Gothic church. Traces of a ditch indicate its location; none of the buildings remain. The remains may be difficult to interpret on site. A fortress probably already stood in Okounov between 1359 and 1368; it was last mentioned as abandoned in 1540. The fortress site is therefore associated with a presumed early structure and its surviving traces, not with preserved buildings.
Route to the observation tower
An unmarked forest path about 250 metres long leads from the road to Oslovice to the Okounov (Pastviště) observation tower. The route climbs around 40 metres. The route description dates from 2023; check local trail conditions before your visit. The roughly 250 metres refer to the path’s length, while the approximately 40 metres refer to the elevation gain.
The observation tower is eight metres high and has an open platform at a height of seven metres. It was built in 2023 from twisted acacia trunks harvested at Holý vrch. Together with the route profile, this provides a separate planning consideration: the path length and elevation gain can be considered separately, while the tower is described by its height, platform and building material.
