Spořice combines the Church of St. Bartholomew and other historical traces with municipal sports facilities. These offer different starting points for planning your trip: you can focus on the history of the buildings and the town, or include sports activities. If you are looking for a hotel in Spořice, this distinction can help you define the purpose of your stay more clearly.

Church of St. Bartholomew and the History of the Town

The Church of St. Bartholomew stands in the south of Spořice on an island formed by a moat. It was converted into a fortified church in the second half of the 15th century and at the beginning of the 16th century. It has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 1958. Its slender Late Gothic tower leans and is compared with the famous Tower of Pisa. The church is also part of a group of fortified churches that together form a circular route around Chomutov.

Spořice itself was first mentioned in 1281 in a document concerning transfers of property by the Teutonic Order in Chomutov. The town’s history therefore encompasses both its early written mention and the later documented building history of the fortified church. The circular route around Chomutov also places St. Bartholomew’s within a group of other fortified churches.

Archaeological Traces and Historic Buildings

A rescue archaeological excavation southeast of Spořice uncovered a settlement from the Early Bronze Age. Settlements of the Hallstatt and La Tène cultures were identified in the same archaeological area. A body grave with personal adornments comes from the La Tène settlement. A polycultural settlement is also located at the Střelnice site in Spořice. Finds from this settlement are kept at the Chomutov District Museum.

The historic agricultural estate on Spořice’s village square comprised a multistorey residential building, a gate, and farm buildings. The inscription “HANS KELLER 1567” appears above the gate. The Zemědělský dvůr u kostela is considered an important monument in Spořice.
