Moldava: Culture and Nature in the Ore Mountains
Accommodation in Moldava
When searching for a hotel in Moldava, its cultural history and the Ore Mountains landscape offer different ways to shape your trip. Both define the area: Moldava stretches across the mountain heights of the Ore Mountains, the plains of Nové Město and the valley of the Mulda spring. Cultural attractions include a listed church, the cemetery and a nature trail about the history of glassmaking. Peat bogs, meadows and black grouse habitats reveal another side of the surrounding area.
Church, Cemetery and Railway History
The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary is a rectangular, single-nave building. Its distinctive prismatic tower is covered with shingles, and its furnishings are pseudo-Baroque. The church was altered in 1687 and extended in 1851; Sunday services are held there regularly. If you plan to visit for a service, check the current arrangements in advance.
The cemetery in Moldava is also a protected monument. Its most notable features are wooden crosses and 19th-century gravestones. The church and cemetery thus connect two different forms of remembrance: a sacred building with a long history of alterations, and grave markers whose materials and dates shape the character of the cemetery.
Another regional monument is the Louka u Litvínova–Moldava v Krušných horách railway section. It has been a cultural monument of the Czech Republic since July 1998.
Glassmaking Along the Nature Trail
The Naučná sklářská stezka explores the history of glassmaking in the Ore Mountains. The 18-kilometre circular trail runs around Moldava and Nové Město, passing former medieval glassworks. Information boards in Czech and German provide explanations along the way, and the nature trail has its own tourist markings. The route thus links two places through a theme that recalls glass production in earlier times.
The trail starts in upper Moldava by the monument to František Koubek, near the petrol station. This information helps you find your way to the starting point. The 18-kilometre length is also a useful guide when considering how the loop fits into your travel plans.
Peat Bogs, Meadows and Black Grouse Habitats
The landscape around Moldava includes peat bogs and species-rich meadows that were once managed. Numerous rare and declining plants still grow in these areas. In the highlands of the Ore Mountains, peatlands, meadows and young replacement plantings also come together to form a mosaic landscape. It provides a breeding habitat for the highly endangered black grouse.
The Východní Krušné hory Bird Protection Area safeguards the black grouse population and its habitat; it also extends across the cadastral area of Moldava. Those interested in the landscape will find not only open highlands here, but also a connection between different habitats and a threatened bird species.
Among the area's notable natural sites is Buky na Bouřňáku, on the western slope of Bouřňák, 400 metres southeast of Nové Město near Moldava. The beeches are a remnant of an old beech stand, with flag-shaped crowns. Climatic influences have shaped these distinctive forms. The site's location, growth forms and stand history make it a distinctive natural attraction in the surrounding area.
Hiking, Cycling and Winter Sports
Sport Centrum Bouřňák includes areas within the cadastral territories of Mikulov and Moldava. The 2023–2024 annual report describes a ski area with six downhill runs of varying difficulty, as well as several kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails. Marked hiking and cycling routes also pass through forests and meadows. These activities span different interests and seasons; check seasonal conditions before travelling.
This means you can consider a range of interests when planning your trip: a themed glassmaking trail, cultural monuments and historic grave markers, nature centred on peat bogs and black grouse, and the sports facilities described in the annual report. Which of these appeals to you most can guide your choice of travel dates and your search for a suitable hotel stay in Moldava.
