Mašťov brings together a variety of cultural and historical highlights: a Baroque chateau on the site of a Gothic castle first mentioned in 1281, churches with different phases of construction, a protected chateau park, and a fire brigade museum. A Jewish cemetery and several Baroque statues are also among the town’s sights. You can plan your trip around your personal interests: architectural history, historic garden conservation, the fire brigade collection, and the historic cemetery each offer a different focus.

Building history and historic sites

Mašťov Chateau is a Baroque chateau standing on the site of a Gothic castle first mentioned in 1281. The year refers to the castle’s first mention, not to a date for the Baroque chateau. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was originally Gothic and was later remodelled in the Baroque style. The Church of St Barbara also has Gothic origins, but was remodelled in the Neo-Romanesque style in the 19th century. Together, these buildings tell several different stories: a Gothic castle that preceded the chateau, a Gothic church with a Baroque remodelling, and a second Gothic church transformed in the Neo-Romanesque style. The historic Mladota family crypt is also located by the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

Several Baroque statues are also among Mašťov’s sights. The Jewish cemetery preserves its historic layout, gravestones, perimeter wall, and access road. Thus, alongside the individual gravestones, the cemetery’s historic layout is also a distinct aspect of the town’s history.

Chateau Park and Nature

The chateau park is part of the chateau grounds and is also a protected historic garden. Its features include a network of footpaths, two ponds, and the Dubá II watercourse. Unlike the churches, the park is experienced primarily through its spatial features: paths, bodies of water, and its integration into the chateau grounds.

Another natural highlight is Radechovské skály. Its rock walls support flora that thrives in warm, dry conditions; the surrounding woodland is also part of this locality. The area is exceptionally valuable for zoology and botany, is home to protected species, and provides nesting and refuge habitats. Compared with the chateau park, it offers different natural features: there, the focus is on footpaths and water; here, it is on rock walls, woodland, and habitats for protected species.

Fire Brigade Museum and Pilgrimages

The Mašťov Fire Brigade Museum displays historic helmets and other historic objects. Its collection includes portable and non-portable fire pumps, fire brigade uniforms, medals and badges, diplomas, and fire brigade-themed toys. The collection therefore ranges from equipment and clothing to awards and toys. If you are more interested in fire brigade history than building history, the collection offers a clearly distinct focus.

Traditional pilgrimages are also part of Mašťov’s cultural life; they take place in August. If you would like to plan your trip around one, check the exact date in advance.

Practical Information

The Mašťov urban conservation area is suitable for wheelchair users. The chateau itself is currently not open to the public; access conditions may change. Check access conditions in advance if visiting the chateau is an important part of your travel plans.
