Kovarska: Building History and Traces of Iron Ore Processing
Accommodation in Kovarska
Kovářská owes its origins to the mining and processing of iron ore. The town lies in the valley of the Černý potok, also called Černá voda; both names refer to the same watercourse, not two different streams. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip to Kovářská, the town’s history, historic buildings, a named walking route, and rail access can help you choose a destination that suits your interests.
Baroque Buildings and Later Landmarks
The Baroque Church of St. Michael, built in 1709–1710, dominates the original town center. Its coffered ceiling is decorated with images of saints. In front of the church stands a Baroque Marian column dating from 1706. The dates can be compared directly: the column was erected three years before construction of the church began. They are also different spatial landmarks: the ceiling is part of the interior, while the column stands in front of the church building.
Behind the municipal building, toward the Černý potok, stands the Chapel of St. Mark, built in 1913. An iron cross dating from 1871 stands nearby. The cross is older than the chapel; the two dates mark different points in the history of these buildings and monuments.
Traces of Industrial History
In 1599, a full-scale blast furnace was built in Kovářská, one of the first in Bohemia. This is a specific early landmark in the history of ore mining and iron processing associated with the town’s origins. Behind Kovářská railway station are the remains of an old lime kiln built in the 1850s. In chronological comparison, an early blast furnace and a later-built lime kiln stand side by side: different structures marking different points in the town’s industrial history.
“Mrtvou cestou na Vápenku” Walking Route
The walking route begins in the square in Kovářská and passes the ruins of the former ironworks. The return route follows the “Mrtvou cesta” forest path back to Kovářská. This gives you the starting point, the section passing the industrial remains, and the return route through the forest. Take the forest path into account when planning, and check the trail conditions before setting out.
Rail Travel and Local History
Kovářská railway station is on the Chomutov–Vejprty line. If you are considering traveling by train, check the current services before your journey. A stone monument commemorating an event also stands near the station. Until recently, it bore a relief with the German inscription “Švédský hrob 1641 – Rašeliniště smrti.”
The Museum of the Air Battle over the Ore Mountains on 11 September 1944 organizes an annual gathering of aviation veterans in Kovářská. If you would like to coordinate your trip with a gathering, check the event dates in advance.
