Valtrovice combines a river landscape shaped by the Dyje with ecclesiastical architectural history and recurring festivals. If you are looking for a hotel in Valtrovice, its natural surroundings, historic buildings and festival calendar offer different ways to shape your trip.

Nature and River Landscape

The Valtrovický luh, a Natura 2000 site of European importance, lies within the cadastral area of Valtrovice. Its protected habitats include well-preserved hardwood floodplain forests and wet areas with alder stands. Mixed ash-alder floodplain forests and mixed floodplain forests with oak, elm and ash are also among them. These habitats show different aspects of the floodplain landscape, from wet alder areas to forests with diverse compositions.

The Dyje forms the southern boundary of the cadastral area and is lined there by floodplain forests. The Meandry Dyje Natura 2000 site is also designated along the river, on the southern edge of the planning area. A field report from June 15, 2021, describes high clay banks and successive meanders at a ford near Valtrovice. This connects the landscape theme of protected habitats with the shape of the riverbanks.

Church, Rectory and Chapel

The parish church in Valtrovice is dedicated to John the Baptist. Its presbytery, the church’s chancel, has a Late Gothic vault. After a comprehensive reconstruction in 2013, the church won the Jihomoravský kraj competition for the best-restored cultural heritage site later that same year. The award was in the category for large buildings.

The present-day rectory also has a precisely dated history: Countess Marie z Althana, née Pignatelli, founded it on March 4, 1748. On the way to the Dyje, there is also a chapel classified as historically valuable. The church, rectory and chapel each offer a different point of reference for local architectural and ecclesiastical history.

Recurring Festivals

Masopust takes place every year in February. Its described program includes a procession of masked participants through the entire municipality, accompanied by a brass band, followed by an evening event. Krojované hody follows in September: a group in traditional costume parades through all of Valtrovice, also accompanied by a brass band; an evening celebration follows.

Krojované hody is considered the municipality’s largest cultural event. St. Nicholas is also celebrated every year in December. The Valtrovický košt is another traditional public cultural and social event in Valtrovice. February, September and December therefore offer different dates to consider if you would like to combine your trip with a festival. Event dates and programs may change, so check the specific dates before your trip.
