Strážovice Between Baroque and Babí lom
Accommodation in Strážovice
Strážovice brings together Baroque buildings, its own event tradition, and the landscape around Babí lom. The village lies on the southwestern slope of Babí lom, which is 417 metres high; to the south, rolling fields dotted with solitary trees and small groves stretch into the distance. Local history and landscape thus stand side by side as two distinct aspects of a stay.
The Chapel and Its Construction History
The Chapel of the Holy Trinity is a Late Baroque building. Its three-bay façade has a dynamic design, and the chapel also houses a valuable collection of Baroque sculptures. The original chapel was built between 1751 and 1753. In 1792, it was enlarged into a church. The chapel’s construction and its later enlargement can therefore be understood as two distinct stages.
Opposite the chapel stands a small Baroque château dating from the first half of the 18th century. Their location opposite one another links the two buildings spatially, while their dates point to different periods: the château dates from the first half of the century, and the original chapel was built between 1751 and 1753. If you are interested in architectural history, this pairing offers two specific historical reference points without reducing the buildings to the same construction period.
Tradition and the Memory of Jan Köhler
The Krojované hody in Strážovice include a procession in traditional costume, traditional songs, and dancing. A mass is also held in the local chapel on Sunday. The dates vary. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the specific dates for your travel period.
The painter Jan Köhler is also connected with Strážovice: he lived in the village from 1926 to 1941. His grave is in the local cemetery and is decorated with a mosaic of the Madonna that Köhler created himself during his lifetime. Here, a specific biographical connection meets a work made by the painter’s own hand. Alongside the buildings and event tradition, this part of the village’s history offers a personal way to discover Strážovice.
Babí lom and the Landscape
Babí lom is 417 metres high and the highest point of the Kyjovská pahorkatina. Strážovice is 1.5 kilometres from the summit. Green- and yellow-marked hiking trails lead up; since markings can change, check them locally before setting out. Cyclists can reach Babí lom via a paved road. These are two different ways to approach the hill: marked hiking trails and the paved road for cyclists.
South of Strážovice, rolling fields dotted with solitary trees and small groves stretch into the distance; this landscape is compared to Tuscany. This setting complements the clearly defined summit with a different feature: fields and scattered groves shape the southern part of the surroundings. If you want to consider both a prominent high point and open farmland when choosing your stay, these two descriptions help distinguish the area’s defining features.
The “búdy” on Lúčky
Wine cellars known as “búdy” have been preserved to this day on Strážovice’s Lúčky. The local name gives this aspect of wine culture a specific term. Together with the chapel, the château, and the Krojované hody, it is one of the named cultural features that shape Strážovice.
