Starý Poddvorov: Windmill and Folklore
Accommodation in Starý Poddvorov
Starý Poddvorov is an interesting destination for travellers who take regional architectural history, folklore or marked routes into account when choosing where to go. Specific points of interest include a historic windmill in a wine-growing and fruit-growing landscape, a local costume rental service and two differently marked routes. Cultural history, cycling and hiking offer different focuses for planning a trip.
The windmill and the wine-growing landscape
The Větrný mlýn Starý Poddvorov windmill is a post mill built entirely of wood in 1880. It stands on a hill in a wine-growing and fruit-growing landscape, about three kilometres from Starý Poddvorov in the direction of Čejkovice. The grounds are open year-round; you can also visit the outside of the mill without a guided tour. Its construction, age and location give the visit a specific architectural and landscape context.
There is also a stand run by local winemakers on the grounds. The winemakers take turns, so visitors can taste wines from a different producer on each visit. At least one winemaker is present on weekends. The wine stand is therefore part of the windmill grounds and adds a wine-tasting option to the visit.
Cycling and hiking
For a bike ride, the marked Podluží cycle route passes through Starý Poddvorov; it is part of the Moravské vinařské stezky network. Check the route status before setting out. This identifies the cycle route as part of a named route network without confusing it with the hiking trail.
A blue-marked hiking route also passes through Starý Poddvorov. It runs through Mikulčice, Josefov, Nový Poddvorov, Starý Poddvorov, Hodonín and Vlkoš. When choosing between the two routes, the mode of travel is the clear distinction: Podluží is the cycling route, while the blue-marked route is for hiking. The listed places also give an overview of the hiking route without specifying a walking time or distance.
Folklore and traditional costumes
The Dětský folklorní soubor Kordulka children’s folklore ensemble was founded in September 1996 at the primary school in Starý Poddvorov. The Dětské krojované hody, revived by Kordulka, grew from a local event into a festival. Ensembles from the surrounding regions, as well as from Poland and Slovakia, regularly take part. The ensemble’s founding and the Hody’s development into a festival show different aspects of the local folklore tradition.
The costume rental service for the Podluží ethnographic region is also located in Starý Poddvorov. Individual costume pieces or complete costumes can be rented by telephone appointment. Those interested in traditional costume culture can choose between individual pieces and a complete costume; rentals are by telephone appointment.
Chapel in the village square
The Kaplička sv. Martina se zvonicí chapel stands in the village square of Starý Poddvorov and dates to 1855. Together with the windmill from 1880, it represents two different structures in the history of the village: one in the square, the other on a hill in the landscape.
Planning your trip
If you are looking for a hotel in Starý Poddvorov, knowing where the attractions are can help you choose what to focus on during your trip. The chapel and costume rental service are in the village; the windmill is about three kilometres away in the direction of Čejkovice. This lets you decide whether to focus your stay more on the village itself or on a visit to the windmill.
