Lomnice: Cultural History and Trails
Accommodation in Lomnice
Local history and routes offer different starting points for planning your trip to Lomnice. The castle, synagogue, and Jewish cemetery represent the town’s cultural heritage; educational trails and the Tišnov Beer Trail add specific route information. This can help you decide whether you are more interested in history or would like to set aside time for a tour.
Cultural History in Lomnice
At the center of Lomnice’s heritage zone is a square with a church, a town hall, and a Baroque Marian column. A castle preceded the chateau. The earliest known owner of the small town of Lomnice was Oldřich z Lomnice, who was mentioned as early as 1265. The chateau is open to the public during European Heritage Days; check the event dates before your visit.
After extensive reconstruction, the synagogue reopened for cultural use in 1997; exhibitions and a variety of cultural events are frequently held there today. The reopening marked the return to cultural use, while today’s events show the synagogue’s current role. The Jewish cemetery is freely accessible and contains more than 1,000 gravestones dating from the 18th to the 20th century. The oldest surviving gravestone dates from 1716. The cemetery grounds also include a mortuary with an exhibition on the history of the Jews of Lomnice. If you plan to visit the cemetery, check access arrangements and information about the collection again before your visit.
Educational Trails and Routes
The Járy Cimrmana Educational Trail begins at the Nohy Járy Cimrmana sculpture at the bus stop on Lomnice’s square and follows the yellow hiking trail markings to a forester’s lodge below Mount Sýkoř. The final stop also references Cimrman: an idealized depiction of Cimrman stands at Pohlavà Járy Cimrmana. Trail conditions may change; check them before setting out.
Visitors and tourists can walk the Obora Educational Trail in Lomnice’s game park. The main Pražská cycling route also runs through the game park. The distinction matters when choosing a route: Obora is a walkable educational trail, while Pražská is a cycling route through the area. This helps you choose between the two routes based on your planned activity.
Tišnov Beer Trail and Practical Planning
The Tišnov Beer Trail is 11.5 km long, takes 3.5 hours, and has an elevation gain of 237 m. Its length, duration, and elevation gain offer different points of reference for planning. Lomnice is the trail’s highlight at the end; the route finishes at Lomnice bus station. From there, you can continue to Brno with a transfer in Tišnov. If you plan to use this connection, check the current services before traveling.
The Genius-Noci Brewery offers brewery tours for groups of ten or more; advance arrangements by phone are required. Bear this requirement in mind if you plan to include a tour in your itinerary.
