Ivaň combines a river landscape with wetlands, protected natural areas and a local history spanning several historical periods. This offers different ways to plan a trip: the Jihlava and Svratka rivers, the Věstonická Reservoir and its birdlife, the Brno–Vienna cycle route, as well as the church, wine and traditional events. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Ivaň, you can first consider whether nature, cycling or a cultural event will shape your trip. You can also choose when to visit based on that focus.

River Landscape and Natural Monuments

Ivaň lies on a river terrace between the Jihlava and Svratka rivers in the Dyjsko-svratecký úval; remnants of floodplain forests have been preserved. Within Ivaň’s cadastral area, the Jihlava and Svratka meet before flowing into the Věstonická Reservoir. Part of the reservoir also extends into the cadastral area. The landscape also includes wetlands, marshes and several oxbow lakes along the rivers and at their confluence.

Named natural monuments include Dolní mušovský luh, covering 48.6 hectares in Ivaň’s cadastral area. Betlém is an 10.87-hectare natural monument and wetland formed on the site of a former sand and gravel quarry. The Věstonická Reservoir is part of the Natura 2000 bird protection area Ptačí oblast Střední nádrž Vodního díla Nové Mlýny.

Winter Birds and the Cycle Route

The birdlife gives the reservoir a seasonal dimension: the Věstonická Reservoir is a wintering ground for white-fronted geese, bean geese and white-tailed eagles. Cycling offers another focus. The Brno–Vienna cycle route passes through Ivaň. For the most part, it follows quiet roads away from main roads and has no steep climbs.

Church, Events and Wine

The Church of St. Bartholomew in Ivaň was built in several stages. An original chapel was built in 1724; the church was erected on its foundations in 1791. It was substantially expanded in 1811, and the tower was raised in 1842. The dates distinguish the church’s origins, expansion and later alteration.

Traditional events in Ivaň include the Bartolomějské hody in August, a wine tasting at Easter, and the Staré hody in October. In recent years, the Staré hody have been organized by women. Vinařský dvůr na faře includes a restored wine cellar that is over 200 years old. The cellar and the wine tasting are two distinct ways to explore Ivaň’s wine scene.

When to Visit and Finding a Hotel

Birdwatching is a winter activity, while traditional events take place at Easter and in August and October. If a festival is the main reason for your trip, check the specific date for the year you plan to visit. This will help you search for a hotel based on the event and your travel dates.
