Accommodation in Hvězdlice
Cultural and historical themes in Hvězdlice range from the archaeological historic center to the history of a medieval fortress and a late Baroque church, as well as memorials from later centuries. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, these different periods can help you explore Hvězdlice according to your interests.
Local history by the Hvězdlička stream
The medieval and early modern historic center of Nové Hvězdlice lies on the right bank of the Hvězdlička stream. It is a Category UAN II archaeological area. Archaeological finds have been documented in the area, or are expected on the basis of well-founded assumptions. Both finds already documented and those reasonably expected are therefore part of the picture of this historic center.
The fortress on Kalvárie Hill
The fortress on Kalvárie Hill was built around the second half of the 13th century under the Lords of Deblín. The hill was formerly called Holá Manda. In 1411, the fortress is mentioned as a ruin, or as abandoned. The period in which it was built and this later reference provide two chronological points in the history of the fortress.
Late Baroque architecture in Nové Hvězdlice
The Church of St. James the Greater and St. Matthew in Nové Hvězdlice represents a much later phase of construction. The late Baroque church was built between 1770 and 1773 to a design by the Moravian architect and master builder František Antonín Grimm. Its construction dates and attribution to Grimm place the church in its historical and architectural context.
Several centuries separate the two building histories: the fortress on Kalvárie Hill was built around the 13th century, while the church dates from the late 18th century. The history of the town thus features both a medieval fortification and a later sacred building.
Memorials in the municipality
A memorial to the fallen victims of the First World War, dating from 1922, stands in the village square. It is made of white marble and topped with a bronze bust of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk. The dedication, material, and design describe different aspects of this memorial.
Another historical landmark lies within the municipality of Hvězdlice, at the edge of the “Oulehle” forest. The boundary stone bears a carved chalice, the year 1598, and the inscription “Sylvestr Stigler parochus”. It documents a dispute between the parish and the Augustinian monastery of St. Thomas in Brno over the parish forest. While the memorial to the fallen is dedicated to the victims of the First World War, the boundary stone records a conflict over the parish forest.
Cycling and hiking trails
Cycling and hiking trails pass through the municipality of Hvězdlice. A proposed cycling route from Nové Hvězdlice via Staré Hvězdlice to Pavlovice is separate from these. This difference in status is relevant to your trip planning if you are considering this particular connection: the cycling route is proposed, while cycling and hiking trails pass through the municipality.
