Hevlín brings together nature, history and cycling as distinct focal points for a stay. If you are looking for a hotel in Hevlín, you can plan your visit around whether you want to focus on historical monuments, the protected wetland or a cycling route.

Nature and Water

Hevlínské jezero is a protected natural monument consisting of several small lakes with reed beds. It provides a habitat for specially protected amphibian species and wetland birds. The Dyje near Hevlín is considered a fishing destination; there are also eight ponds in the centre of the town. This means there are different ways to enjoy the water: a protected wetland, the river as a fishing destination and ponds in the town centre.

Monuments and History

The Romanesque column is Hevlín’s oldest and most valuable monument; it once marked a ford across the Dyje. The stone Boží muka monument in Hevlín is Late Gothic and an example of small-scale religious architecture in South Moravia from the transition between the Middle Ages and the early modern period. Its lantern, open at the front, bears figurative reliefs of four saints; it is made of Austrian shell limestone. The monument is considered structurally at risk.

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary has been documented since 1282; the present-day Baroque church was completed in 1743. The chapel by the railway crossing was built in 1777. The statue of Saint Roch was erected in 1832 following a cholera epidemic. These historical dates refer to different buildings and periods.

The traditional Hevlínské krojované hody festivities include a procession of the costumed community through Hevlín, accompanied by brass band music. The participating groups and the music may vary.

Cycling Routes and Route Characteristics

The Brno–Vienna cycling route leads to the Hevlín/Laa an der Thaya border crossing and is almost 170 kilometres long in total. It runs mainly away from busy roads, on dedicated cycle paths or on quiet, lower-class roads.

The “Po rovince” cycling route is a signposted 44-kilometre loop: from Hevlín, it goes via Jevišovka, Hrušovany nad Jevišovkou, Pravice, Šanov, Velký Karlov and Dyjákovice before returning to Hevlín. Eighty percent of it runs on local roads without regular road traffic. The cross-border “Ahoj sousede, Hallo Nachbar” cycling route passes through a quiet, almost untouched landscape, along well-maintained paths and with little change in elevation.

Different features are useful for comparison: “Po rovince” is a 44-kilometre loop, while Brno–Vienna is almost 170 kilometres long; the route character of “Ahoj sousede, Hallo Nachbar” is defined by its landscape and little change in elevation.
