Vratěnín brings together a range of themes for a stay: the late Baroque parish church, archaeological traces at “U kola,” the history of post stations and fortifications, and trails through a protected landscape. The individual buildings and sites offer a glimpse into different chapters of the town’s history; hiking and cycling are also practical focuses when planning a visit.

Church, Sculptures and Heritage History

The parish church of St. James the Greater is a late Baroque building dating from 1771 to 1773. Three 18th-century sculptures can be found at the church. A sandstone statue depicts the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child and dates from the second quarter of the century. The statues of St. Francis Xavier and St. John of Nepomuk are made of shell limestone and date to the first third of the 18th century. Sculptures from different periods of the same century thus come together at one building.

The town’s history also includes older religious buildings: the former monastery church was consecrated in 1739. It had two towers, two chapels and seven altars. The church later burned down and has not been preserved intact. This former church should be distinguished from the parish church of St. James the Greater, which was built between 1771 and 1773.

Vratěnín was designated a village heritage zone (Vesnická památková zóna) in 1995. There are 21 listed buildings and sites in the Vratěnín cadastral area. Both details are part of the town’s heritage history; the number of protected properties refers to the cadastral area and not necessarily to the boundaries of the heritage zone.

Archaeological Traces at “U kola”

The “U kola” archaeological site preserves the remains of a fortified settlement with a circular ground plan and a diameter of 65 metres. Finds from the Palaeolithic, Neolithic, La Tène period and Early Middle Ages in the surrounding area provide archaeological evidence of different periods. The time span thus extends from prehistory to the Early Middle Ages.

The site at “U kola” has a 35-metre core surrounded by a ditch 10 to 12 metres wide and 3.15 metres deep. These measurements give the site a clear spatial scale. Visitors interested in archaeology can consider both the circular shape of the settlement remains and the details of the core and ditch.

Post Stations and Fortifications

The former post station building in Vratěnín was built around 1700 by postmaster Jan Plessner. Vratěnín and Slavonice were the first post stations in Moravia. The former manor house on the market square is described as the town’s original fortress. Together, these places offer a glimpse into different aspects of Vratěnín’s historic buildings, while the former post station and the manor house are distinct sites.

The fortifications mini-museum is housed in an unusual ŘOPík vz. 37 A-120N bunker dating from 1937. As part of the fortifications exhibit, visitors can view historical weapons and equipment and learn about the so-called “false border” from the era of the former regime. The subject therefore extends beyond the bunker’s architecture to include the history of the border.

Another historical account concerns Mount Šibeník: in 1750, the inhabitants of Vratěnín decided to erect a statue of St. Donatus there. The saint is venerated as the patron against storms, lightning and hail; the statue was intended to protect the village and its fields. The account records the decision and its intended protective purpose.

Nature Reserve and Trails

The Bílý kříž Nature Reserve protects vegetation on steep, sunny rocky slopes, the adjoining woodland with its rich variety of species and ages, and protected plant and animal species. The area is named after the rocky Bílý kříž viewpoint. A marked trail, the Graselova stezka, leads from there.

The Graselova stezka Vratěnín is a circular trail of moderate difficulty, approximately 7 to 11 kilometres long, with three stops. It passes Vratěnínský rybník and branches off towards Graselova vyhlídka or Zlatá studánka. These specific route details and named destinations provide a concrete sense of the hiking options. Vratěnín is also on the Prague–Vienna long-distance cycling route and the Iron Curtain Trail, EuroVelo 13.
